When I travel over smallish bumps/dips in the road I hear a knocking noise from under the car, it sounds like it's coming from the front (but can't be sure). I have been told that my engine / gearbox mounts need replacing at some point, but told that they are unlikely to make this sort of noise? Rear bump stop and axle bushes are probably due for replacement in the the future too.
I know this maybe like searching for needle in a haystack, but thought it was worth a go anyway. Any ideas???
Cheers

If I had to check for all for all noises from my car I'd be there all day.....
Wouldn't be exhaust perhaps??

knackered top mounts
or maybe....

I had a similar problem with a previous golf I had after I had fitted a lowering kit, check the shocks are not lose at the top and to try and find where the noise is simply open the bonnet and push the front corners of the car down, this should help you find the source. Get someone to push it down while you look, this will make it easier to find if it is underneathe :)

I wouldn't be so sure. If they are badly worn then your engine is going to move eccessively in relation to the chassis. This means the front end of your exhaust pipe is also moving exccessively and could be hitting the chassis :-\

Had that exact same problem when i fitted coilovers.
The new topmounts had a gap (5mm gap) between the metal underside of the mount to the top of the coilover (or spring plate in your case?)
I fixed this problem by putting a metal washer (5mm washer) between the topmount and the suspension.
Sorted ;D

open the bonnet and press down on the car. Listen for the 'clicking' noise from your topmounts.
If your topmounts are old then change them. if they are new and make that 'click' noise then try the metal washer trick.
hope that helps :)

Agree with the exhaust theory
