Title: Freezing in 8V
Post by: gozzy on 09 December 2003, 10:03
Hi I Really hope some one can help as my heaters have packed up. The engine temp is fine but there is very little hot air coming out of the vents. I am not loosing water and the level is spot on. I am thinking maybe a blocked or faulty matrix. any ideas ppl thanks

Is there any air coming out? just cold? try replacing the bypass valve if you are only getting cold air.

Look at the 2 hoses that go into the bulkhead by the expansion tank, these go into the matrix and the bypass hose sits between these.

It doesnt smell like fish all the time. just sometimes for a few minutes. Think the system needs a good flush

what is the recall VAG did on the heater system of the MK2

they fitted bypass valves to the heater matrix pipes that go into the bulkhead to stop the matrix bursting.

Reminds me! goin to VW now, laterz :)

Quote from 'red 16v':-

This is a factory recall to prevent the possibility of boiling hot water being 'spewed' over your feet. It is not optional. I have spoken to Volkswagen on this very topic only a matter of a few weeks ago (as a result of a previous question on this point on this very forum). Volkswagen have maintained a list of cars that have been modified and they perform this modification to any car that requires it regardless of the age or the mileage of the car. It is not a replacement of a faulty part - it is the fitting of a safety bypass device. It is not for your local dealer to say that VW have stopped doing it - they have not. It sounds as though your local dealer is being very lazy and can't be bothered. Go and see them again, ask them to check if the modification has been performed and if not instruct them to carry it out. If they refuse,  take it up with VW HQ in Milton Keynes, their number is in the phonebook. regards, yt.

Rich i just went to VW and they said 'NO THERE AR NO OUTSTANDING RECALLS ON YOUR CAR'' WTF?

I told the woman that it was dangerous if it was not fitted and the other VAG's are doing it for free! (small blag)

She then told me to book it in to be charged for it >:(

walked str8 out!    BEDFORD VW VINDIS CAN EAT DIK!  ;D

 >:( >:(

Guess the next step is to take 'red 16v' advice and call VW HQ in Milton Keynes, see what they have to say..........let us know how you get on.

Somewhere on the net there is a list of all current VW recalls. Anyone know where it is?
I'll try and find it myself later, if no-one comes up with it.
