Title: Mk1 Project

I am planning on getting my old MK1 back, Its a 1.0ltr. nothing fantastic, but i think a good base for a project.

I have no macanical skills so it should be fun.... my first thing is strip it down. 

What I am looking for is anyone local to me to help... I am from witney near oxford. if anyone is around and knows what there doing I may need help from time to time.

once stipped. where do i start?

ask a supid question get the obvious answer lol..

do i start with uprating brakes? suspension? lol i know nothing... why did i waste my time on computers

Sort the bodywork first  :smiley: then i suppose it depends on your long term plans  :huh:

plans are a track car. just for fun..

just want it to handle well. bit nippy not a huge engine, maybe even a 1.6. nothing exciting. very basic inside, 2 seat, steering wheel etc. 

also would like it road leagal

ok - first things first - you need to log everything you take off and label up wires if you want to mod or use them later on as well. Bag up all little bits together and label them and log then in a book - so you can put back together again later....

prep work is the time consuming part on a strip down, but will save you loads of time later....

I always do a strip down a car this way.

1. Engine area first
Then put car on axle stands - so can work on underneath.... - you might want to make a jig to sit the car on to move it about when all the underneath is taken off...
2. then underneath - exhaust, brake pipes, fuel tank, fuel pump, rear beam - to refurb... then suspension, brakes off - gear linkage underneath car.
3. Then from front of the car going backwards - take everything off the car outside.
4. Leave the interior last
5. take off glass

If you are going down the route of new suspension for lowering etc, then take them off last so you can mod arch's etc then play around with suspension until you get it how you want and then once all done - put old suspension back on for prepping the rest of the car bodywork and get bodywork sprayed if needed.

Then rebuild starts.....

Refurb underneath parts, install new Suspension, brakes, brake lines, pump, tank, then engine area - get that all working, then work on the interior and then put all the outside parts on...

That is very short list, but it all depends on what you are looking at doing...

KEY is prep work - make a plan of what you want to do first and keep to it....!!!! (if you can) and make a plan for taking parts off and how you put it back on as a few months along your forget...

Thanks thats great help.

Went and saw my mate last night who bought the mk1 off me and he is happy for me to have it.  and I am in luck.  He has just started a job at a machnics, so i now have place to do the work (hopefully), the tools and some people to help, the owner is a vw fan and knows them inside out. so heres some pics

Looks like a nice blank canvas :)
You're going to need his help as the first order of busines once the engine is out is to chop off the gearbox mount and weld on a suitable mount for the larger block engines :)
