Title: wheel bearing/ driveshaft?

Hi all

 I have a humming noise when driving my mk2 along the road which i suspected to be a wheelbearing but after jacking the car up i cant feel any excess play in any of the bearings. The only thing i do hear is on the passenger side front when i start to spin the wheels it's like the bearings engaging and then you start getting the humming sound but there is no play top/bottom or left/right?

Could this be a wheel bearing or a cv joint as one of them is clicking when i put it in full lock. If so i have 4 spare driveshafts but they are off 8v and i dont know if they are the same? Will they fit?

Sounds more like the cv joint to me, driveshafts will fit as they are all the same length on the 8vs and 16vs.

I think it is that mate after reading the bentley manual. I might as well give it a go as i have some spare.

Oh and another thing. The car is pretty smokey the now but the boy i bought it off hasnt changed the oil for 2/3 years. Could this be the reason it is smoky? and yes i am going to give it a service before driving it to stonor.

For the cv clicking how does it go? if i turn left does the left one click and if i turn right does the right one click?
