On another thread theres talk of door speakers for your MK2 and that you can by these speakers grills to prelace the pockets.
I've just been to VW bought 2 grills (21 quid) but for the life of me I cant see how I can fit the speaker, do I need to buy something else that will hold the speaker in place behind the grill or am i just being dumb....... :P
cheers
-
the speaker grills should have some twist on bolts. Does yours have these?
If they dont then take the rear speaker bolts and use them to secure the speakers to the grill.
-
Blue the speaker grill is "just a plastic grill" with like four stalks one from each corner, I opened the pocket and i could see four holes in each corner that i presume these stalk things push through...................there isnt anything tappered that looks like bolts could get screwed on to it, I wonder if i've been given the right thing?
blast the cars going into have sounds fitted the wednesday and i really need these door things otherwsie they wont be able to fit the speakers >:(
by the way what size speakers can i fit in the doors?
cheers
-
speaker size has to 5 1/4 inch or 13cm whichever way you work.
the '4 stalks' go though the speakers mounting positions. there should be 4 nuts that hold the speaker to the bit. See pic

-
go to the scrappy and nick the nut/bolt things :P.
If you are not using your rear standard speakers then just take them of the rear ones. ;D
-
Cheers dudes for the help,
just been out to look at the rears, and i can see that the stalks are groved so the nut can screw on to it, the ones i got are smooth so nothing for the bolt to screw down on...............................
theres is however at the bottom of the grill a little hole that the spare part guy said I need to put a screw through to attach the grill to the door, cant see that hole on yours Diz?
-
that holds it to the pocket. I used a screw that I got with my speakers. just a black self tapper will do the trick.
on my pic it's hidden by that mother of a magnet. it's there don't worry. make sure you put it in else when they hit a dr dre esq bass note they'll blow themselves out of the doors.
-
Diz,
trying to look closely at your pictur eit looks like you've actually cut away some of the platic in the door pocket hole, is that to help the speaker fit, or am i imaging it, have you a picture of the door pocket area with out the speaker in so i can get a better idea of what you've done.
Also that is one big mutha F'er of a speaker its depth look massive which spekaer is it i can see alpine cant make the last digit out on the model
-
Taken from another post Dizzie's speakers are these:

The smooth stalks are coz they are new grills, the nut will twist straight on nice and tight

Finally the penny has dropped !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
I must say hats off to you guys, i own a jap sports car aswell and you ask a newbie question on there and they just take the piss out of you and act like complete stuck up tossers, its must be true what they say a golf is a car for all classes
cheers
-
cheers for giving a clear description once again guys as ive just come on here to ask the same question lol
-
I had exactly the same thing when I bought my grills from the dealer.. What I had to do was use the fixings that came with the speakers (sort of push on one way spring washer) and drill them out slightly so that they would fit over the four plastic studs. Fitted a treat and they have never budged since.
I must have been very lucky as they only charged me ?11 for the pair. Either they got it wrong and charged me single price for a pair of grills or else you were diddled.. If you are happy with your price then I would keep schtum :)
Paul. :)
-
thank you reserves my son ;D
I haven't cut any plastic. I had to cut the actual door card to get them in there cos like you say those magnets are huge!
I found mine in a car in the scrappy when i was on a relay hunt last visit. Bought a audi throttle body and those adaptors for ?15. the speakers blew the grills off straight away though so I don't use them anymore..
-
anyone know a part number for the grilles? I missed a set that was going on ebay. ::) I have a set of Infinity Kappa 5 1/4 that would be nice in there. Gotta be better than the 3 1/2" VAG ones in the dash right now. Hopefully have the stealth shelf before long as well. ;D
-
Does anyone know the rough (or exact!) mounting depth the speaker can be before you have to cut the panel (which I won't do).
Also I know that 13cm & 5" components fit in the original door mounts but do 5.25" actually fit ??
has anyone got 5.25" comps fitted?
8916vGti, The grills are about 6.50 each from http://www.gpcvwaudi.com/
(http://www.gpcvwaudi.com/)
-
well i've got the grills, dont know the part number just told the guy at the parts counter, and he knew exactly what i was going on about
i've just ordered a set of focals components, 5.25" i never though about the depth of the speaker to see if they would fit, should get them on friday be fitted by saturday so i can post up then and let you know, if no one replied before then
also I rang that place that does the speakers for 6.50 this is what he said "mate we have them in stock, but by the time i've added vat & p&p you'll only save yourself a quid compared to vag" so I got them same day from vag ;D
cheers
-
Diluxe, let me know how it goes with the focals.
Which ones did you go for? What are you powering them with?
R
-
well you only have to cut a little bit out to fit mine in and those magnets are huge mofo's!
-
does your door have any rattles when blasting tunes Dizzy?
How does it sound? Crisp, Bassy, tweety?
-
I got some Focal Access 130A, about 130 from halfrauds or 120 on the net
I will have them running of an alpine 9815 headunit
hope it stops raining on saturday
I got bigger things to worry about at the moment have you guys read my post about "kangaroo golf"
-
sounds crisp enough. they're not mega bassy obviously due to their size and how they're mounted. but they give excellent sound in the front. I disconnected then and left the tweaters connected and you could defiently tell.
-
Diluxe,
How do they sound?
R
-
i just fitted a set of jbls in mine improves the sound in there no end, well worth doing now gotta get an amp to run em properly
-
Are they 5" or 5.25", i'm interested to see if the 5.25" speakers fit.
-
i think there 5.25s
will go and have a look
-
the box only says 13cm on it but im sure thats also 5.25inch, they should fit the 5.25 speakers
-
Out of interest lads, rather than bothering with all the speaker depths/fittings etc, why not just build some speaker pods to hold your speakers nice n snug. Thats what I am gonna do come summer time !!!
-
or just buy some. you can get some pre built but, i forget who they are made but but they hold 5 1/4 inch and tweeters. home made ones are more satisfying tho! ;D
-
I prefer to keep the stereo looking stockish but sounding the bollox and usually mount the tweeters just in front on the pillars with the speakers on the door in my very well built pods :)
-
yeah i put mine in the factory dash position and the mids in the doors, just put a sub and amp in the boot and amped the lot. sounded nice!
keeped it out of site of light fingered w$%kers as well! ;)
-
Definately, thats why I keep mine in the factory positions. I dont bother with subs no more as its not worth the hastle> all it does is kill ya alternator, make everything rattle n tempt the W kers to nick it. In fact I dont even have a rear shelf so they can see there is no point in breaking in :).
If only stopping the water breaking in was so easy, damn sound proofing is still wet :(
-
aye! b&q builders sand bags are wicked for fiximg leaky doors tho!
-
Yeah I heard that, recently fixed the passengers side with a heavy duty bin liner. I think it is now coming in thru the rear window rubbers !! I have hopefully sorted with some trusty silcone rubber front halfords, Have taken the sound proofing out and is currently drying in my bathroom. Will have to test it at the weekend :).

Does anyone know what mounting depth the door speakers can go to?
I'm looking at some JL's that have a mounting depth of 2.81"
I'm off to the states on the 29th and will buy the JL's there, so if anyone can confirm these will fit it would be great!
