Hi
I?m putting a turbo unit on my MK1 golf and would like to know what engine compression ratio it is. I have checked the Hanes manual but it stops at 1714cc engine size. I rang my local dealer but they just are no help with the older cars. It?s a 1983 (Y plate) 1.8 8V golf. Any help with this would be great.
Thanks
Lewis

My cabrio and the campaigns of that age had the DX engine fitted. I'm assuming your engine is the same code, in which case the compression ratio is 10.0 : 1
Its listed in the back of my Haynes manual in the supplement section........I have one of the older Haynes manuals: 726 (Brown cover)

Thanks
My Haynes manual has a blue cover. In the engine section they have a break down of all the different types of engines. For some reason it does not mention the GTI 1.8. The 1.6 has 3 engine types ranging from 7.1 up to 9.1 so I was hoping that it would be lower. Looks like ill need to skim my pistons then.

Hmmm, my books are all older I expect. I do have a blue covered one (716) that covers the 1093 and 1272 cc Golf's 1974 to 84
I have the brown one already mentioned and I have the green one (1081) which covers the Mk2 1043, 1272, 1595 and 1781cc Golf's 1984 to 1988.
I think they have changed now as MK1_BOY has a manual to cover his car and its red and half the thickness of mine........that covers the same car :o
