Post by: brains on 08 December 2003, 08:04
need a new set of spare keys after the wife managed to loose them in her bag???? (must be a bird thing) ;D

just wondering were the best place to get them from,

I think later Mk3 GTis have the immobiliser chip  built into the key.  My local Timpsons key cutting place reckons they can cut a new chipped key and program the chip from your old key.  Ain't tried it, but at ?20 it's a lot cheaper than VW.

Anyone tried this approach?  I wanted to get another soare cut, and was tempted...

I HAVE A P PLATE GTI,
SO DOES THAT MEAN I HAVE THE CHIP IN MY KEY?

I think so yes.  You can tell easily.  Switch the ignition on but do not fire the engine.  If the orange immobiliser light stays on for a few seconds and then goes out with a click, that is the key disengaging the immobiliser.

I looked at a P plate GTi before buying mine and I'm sure it was the same as my R plater.

I could be getting confused with the missus' car!!!  Ignore the light, I'm probably speaking sh*te.  I still think your P plate will have a chip in the key tho.

You could take it to VW - ask them if it has an immobiliser chip in it.  If they say Yes, say OK how much for a new one.  If they say ?100 sir, say you'll think about it.  If, on the other hand it's only ?30 get them to do it.   The guys I spoke to in the key cutters wanted ?25.   I'd be more inclined to get a VW one as I just wonder if you try and start it with a duff key it might do something horrible to your ECU - like shut it down????   Coz it thinks you're trying to nick it????   Others may have more of an idea about the likely impact of a key with no chip.

had a look last night and theres a little rectangle thing in the key body, which i am thinking is the chip. when i was looking at the hand book it said there should be a little key ring with the imobilliser number on it for programing the chip.
guess what.................
i dont have the fecking key ring!

I got a new key cut at the local VW dealer for my L plate 16v and it was very cheap (less that 20 quid). Don't think it has an immobiliser chip in it though and I think my Sigma alarm has an immobiliser built in.

I got a key cut at vw for my 95 vr6, it cost about 12 quid. No transponder fitted in the key.

My experience VW dealers and keys is good (for a change)

On my late 16V I had to have one prgrammed at VW as the ID tag was lost they had to program it from the Vin number by faxing the Factory in Wolfsburg and then prgramming it. It cost about ?25 but they had to keep the car for the day.

I always prefer original keys to ones from the highstreet as they last a lot better (quality) and they have the right badge on them
