Post by: lee on 07 April 2003, 21:58
:o hello does anybody know if a 1989 golf 16v comes with a beesting aerial? also what should i do to make the same car run on unleaded petrol. Ive been told to get a k-star thing.

1989 16v should definitely have a beesting aeriel and a blanking plate on the front wing where an aerial goes on lesser models.

You should be able to use Super Unleaded (97/98 octane) just fine.  Shell Optimax is particularly good.  The K-star will allow you to use any unleaded (95 oct etc) but the cost is unlikely to warant it unless super is withdrawn from sale.

I used unleaded in my 1989 1300 and had no problems, I think it should say behind your fuel cap cover, if not ask your local VAG dealer.

Isn't the modification simply to retard the ignition timing?

The 16V golf was the first car to have the beesting aerial and all the other car makers have nicked the idea rather like they have with the GTI concept. I use optimax in my 16V and it always seems to go like a rocket on the stuff

Not on the 16v as I believe it's done a differnt way to the 8v, hence the problems.

The recommend RON for the 16V is 98 so in theory you should only use Optimax in these engines, I sometimes use LRP in every other tankfull but I try and not use normal unleaded as it seems to feel lacklustre.I've never had pinking but the car just seems to love optimax.
