I have heard if you disconnect the battery for a while and then reconnect they sort them selves out. Worth a try me thinks  8)

the vacume hose behind the speedo has probably come off. Plug it back in.;)

I may be wrong, but if the sensor was working correctly, a low vacuum (sp) will show a poor mpg?
Steve.

happend to mine till i reconnected the hose.

I think its reading 99.9mpg because its got nothing to calculate hence the hose has come off?

There have been a few posts about this.

Hi,

thanks for the hints, had the battery disconnected for about 3 hours, everything reset to zero, all reading read -- -- - for about 5 minutes and then i went for a drive around the block, and everything but the mpg on setting 1 and 2 seems not to work and is stuck again at 99.9 mpg :-X

so i guess it must be this vaccum hose, how easy is it to get to the back of the dials? and is thereanything i can do to keep it on , and even more importantly what made it come off?

cheers

You have to unclip all the switches first. Take the headunit out also.

Once all these are out of the way you will find a few screws (about 5-6) located behind the switches. This will be clear once you have taken the parts out.

There are 2 screws near the top of the speedo and one behind the main light switch.

Pull the dash surround out and there will be 2 more screws that old the speedo in place

Pull the speedo out but try and keep the speedo cable in its place. Refit the hose and your done mate. :)

The hose probably came off if it was pulled from the inlet manifold

Where abouts in the engine bay does the vaccum hose run?  I have --- on MPG, Miles and Average Speed but the vacuum hose is definatly firmly connected to the back of the speedo.
By the way FYI Diluxe, I found that it was impossible to remove the clocks unit without removing the speedo cable (which is a bit of a b!tch, had to reach around with my right hand and squeeze the plastic arms on the connector plug).

Cheers Blue & Jez,

I was just about to post, the following reply "before I dismantle the dash, is there anywhere in the engine bay i should check that the hose has not come loose or split"

but you've posted up a picture so  :D , what engine is that i guess thats not a 16v?

also I recently changed the air filter could i have screwed something up there, I notice that on the top the air filter box is a big round thing with 5 or so braided cables coming out......................................

cheers

I have got the same prob on my 8V ( 1989 ), Checked the hoses all ok, so I think mine is a faulty  sensor on the back of the instro cluster - I've given up and learned to live with it!

I know its a cop out!!!!!!!!!!

Its an 1992 8V Digifant. Dirty engine in that pic but its very clean now. Cleanest ive seen in a mk2 for its age if i say so myself ;)

If the vacuum pipe to the dash was split or disconected, the sensor will see less or no vacuum. Why would that make your mpg look higher?, I thought that the lower the vacuum (throttle open) the less mpg, higher vacuum more mpg. Sounds like a faulty sensor, easy check of the pipe and connection to the dash, unplug the pipe at the engine and suck it. If you can suck thru if, split or disconected, if you can't faulty unit. Eather way, dash out to fix.

Steve,

wheres is the pipe connected at the engine bay side?

Can't say for sure on a mk2, on my mk1 it was a white/clear plastic pipe connected close to the throttle body. Should be the only small vac pipe going through the bulk head. (could be wrong  :-\) Anyone?.
Steve.

Look on the picture that appears earlier in this subject, top right hand corner there is a little yellow cap ( where the brake servo pipe connects to the throttle body ) the thin clear plastic vac pipe connects onto a union here. it pushes into another rubber pipe.

Hi

Sorry to revive an old thread.

The rubber tube that measures mpg is connected to the back of the speedo but the other end is not connected to anything...im getting a reading of 16mpg randomly but would much prefer to have it all put back together.

Someone posted a picture on this thread of which area the nib should be to plug it back in...anyone able to shed any light? tried yesterday but couldnt find anything obvious. I have an 89 8v digi.

Thanks

Gavin

If you look where the brave servo pipe goes to the inlet it should be there. Might be teed in might go straight on. It all runs on the same vac system so if you run through you vac lines and cant find any leaking or a t piece. Just tee it in

Cheers for that

So so the clear pipes from the inlet needs to go through the bulk head to behind the speedo or should something already be there?

The clear pipe should go through towards the clocks. From memory. I run a 16v but dont use mfa so its all deleted from the car.
Ill pull the old vac lines out and see if the old lines are labelled. It may help

Right. Mine came from the servi pupe to the ecu and is tead into there to go mfa. Dont ask where it goes through to the clocks because i dont remeber. I seem to think if you look in the scuttle maybe under the ecu tray or around that sort of area
