I was driving my 1986 GTI along going from 2nd to 3rd gear and the clutch let go like the cable parted. The cable is Ok. Pulled the tin cap over the release bearing. The bearing was not returning up the tube to the release arm. Pulled the release bearing and the rod. The rod is straight, both ends seem Ok. Checked the spare motor and trans and it is doing the same. Clutch arm swings free. Transmission is out and I'm waiting for the 8mm 12 point sockets to pull the clutch pack to inspect. Any ideas or advise?
Would it be the release disk or pressure plate? What clutch replacement kit would be a good one to replace this one for everyday use?

What are the clutch fingers like? Sounds like a few may be broken and the rest are worn.
I'd recommend a replacement from GSF.......had no problems to date.

By the way, the multihex bolts on my clutch are 9mm not 8mm, I just double checked as I had to buy a multihex socket too.
