Just popped down to Euro Car Parts to get some gearbox oil and spoke to a Joker who told me I needed 4 litres which seemed about right. Then he said they only sell it in 0.5 litres bottles and I need 8 obviously. All seemed fine until he said they are ?6 odd plus v.a.t. Is this chimp winding me up or what ???
-
You need 2 litres of gearbox oil.
-
ah ok, I have no idea :P
Any idea how much it should cost me ? Is there anywhere I can simply buy 2 lires rather than 0.5 ?
-
Hi you can buy gear oil in 1litre bottles I stick in comma fully synthetic oil in my mk2`s (better for the old 1st to 2nd syncro wear)
cost`s me around a tenner for the 2litres needed cheers :)

Thx all, today I bought 2 litres of Castrol EP80 w 90 for about ?12. Will be changing it tomorrow weather being ok. Is it a difficult job or just similar to engine oil changing ? Anything I need to bear in mind/need ?
-
You will need a 17mm hexagon socket. Drain plug is by the diff. Filler plug is at the end of the box behind the front left wheel.
Drain oil, refill until oil seeps out of filler plug hole.
-
Thx to you as always VR, how do I actually get the oil into the box as it obviously does not have a filler like the top of the engine ? :)
-
With a funnel. Ideally you want a washing machine hose, cut the ends off it, you can get in anywhere with that. You can buy these hoses for about a fiver from most electrical stores.
Also be careful when doing up the drain and filler plug. You can see how far the plugs are supposed to go in as the thread that doesn't go in will be dirty. If in doubt use a torque wrench.

thx will try that :).
Wahey knew I had seen one somewhere, me old man kept the old ones when the new machine was fitted. Found em in the celar :).
-
Had look today and was gonna do the drain it etc, but I am fcuked if I can see the top up bolt/thingy. I think I found the drain plug but not sure. It was 17mm hex bolt, should this be the only there ?
-
its the only 17mm hex bolt on the underside of the diff
an easier way to fill it is thru the speedo cable hole, with the filler bolt on the side removed, then when it seeps out the side of the filler hole you know its full
bit less messy but its 6 of one, half a dozen of the other really!
-
OK problem is I cant find the filler bolt, I have found the 17mm hex bolt which is the drain plug but am fcuked if I can find the filler. Haynes manual is not helpful either as does not show a pic of it. To make matter worse my car has been lowered 60 mm :(
-
Look behind the front/left wheel. It is at the end of the gearbox.
-
its probably covered in all the sh!te of the day!! so you may have to give it a bit of a clean to see it!
-
Good point, I will have another look when I can be fcuked. After xmas now me thinks :), too damn cold otherwise !!
-
The filler plug looks just like the drain plug.
-
have a real good look, it took me a while too find it as well
-
thx all, not got round to it yet as tried and it was bloody freezing. Problem I am having is the fact it is so damn low, I brush my cheek on the bumper trying to get my head under :(. Will report back once I have tackled it.
Thx again

Probably would be easier to jack up a little and turn the steering.
