Hi There,
I am currently putting in a fairly big install in my 8v gti 91, i am a little worried that the standard alternator will not be able to cope with the amount of current drawn from the battery by the numerous amps i will have installed.
Is there any other more powerful alternators from another vw car that i may be able to use without too many modifications.
Not sure if i have posted this in the right part but i will wait and see!
Thanks for the help!

Are you gonna b puttin a stiffening cap in the install?
the rocky fosgate 1 farad ones are good

You will have to excuse my ignorance, i am doing the install myself and have quite limited knowledge.
I can wire up amplifiers and everything else ok but after that my lack of knowledge starts to show. I want to do everything myself so that i can learn!
I think i know what a stiffening cap is, if i am not mistaken it is like a mini "battery" that stores power reserves for when a big bass note or when the volume is cranked up? Please correct me if i am wrong!
Anyway, what sort of difference would this addition make to my ICE?
Thanks for the help!

yes that is what it is, you can get uprated batteries as well, its not always necessary to up grade the alternator for an install what are you planning to run?

depends what type of tunes ur gonna whack in, u going for a bass monster spl system? or a high quality sweet sounding one?
Either way id recommend a little more sound proofing in the old golf, some dynamat in the boot and some in the headlining(bizarre but effective)
Give us all more of an idea of the type of install ur going for and im sure peeps will all give u some ideas... my system comprises of:-
Alpine 7838R head unit
Alpine V12 F407 4 channel amp
Alpine DDrive 6x9s
Rockford Fosgate 6.5" components in the front doors
12" Longmill cyclops in the boot
Rocky Fosgate wiring throughout
its cost me about ?700 for it all...sounds pretty good too, although id like to replace the sub with a better one and add a monoblock amp 2 drive it so the 6x9s dont run off the head unit.. :P

Alright,
I am running 2 10"subs,pair of 6x9, 5" Focal + Tweets on 2amps my freg golf seems to cope with it fine!
The only thing I would do is get a bigger and better battery and u should have nothing to worry about.
:D ;)
Could help if u tell us what equ u are installing!

Hi All,
I have it all sorted now, i went away on holiday and left it all in the capable hands of a car audio specialist. It sounds great but i think i may be getting old as the bass may be a bit ott for me and i may have to get a smaller sub!!
