Title: wheels scrubbing how do i stop this
Post by: cupra20v.t on 17 May 2006, 09:16
i have audi tt competition alloys on my mk3 golf gti, its lowered 45-50mm but on certain bumps and dips in the road the rear wheels rub.

i have grinded the lip on the arches off and i have hamered the inner arch out a bit but the rubbing is from the tyre going up in the arch and the tyre scrubbing the inner arch.  when the wheel is off i can see the areas of where the tyre has caught and i try to hammer it out so it doesnt catch but i cant get the scrubbing to stop.

the bump stops i have on the shocks are very small as they are ones off my old shock which had perished and rotted away.  so i was thinking of putting new bump stops on but i would like the arches to be modded to stop the rubbing.

can anyone offer me any advice on how to "roll" my arches to stop the rubbing, hitting with a hammer is tiring and the effect is minimal.

also where can i get bump stops from?

cheers in advance.

hi
what tyres are you useing ,my car has 205 40 17 tyres they rub slightly with 4 people in the car but on my last mk3 with same wheels  i had 205 40 17 toyo tyres and they did not catch at all ,i think some tyres are slightly wider than others, also my car has koni ajustables set in the middle so that probably stops some of the rubbing ,powerflex do good bumpstops sometimes on ebay
or try www.gsfcarparts.com.

yes im running 205/40/17 tyres all round the rears sort of cave in so they dont protrude out past the alloy like some tyres but they still scrun like mad when going oer bumps and dips in the road with just me in the car.  i have 60mm springs and dampers al round but the rears are adjustable from 80mm to 40mm so i think im going to have to higher the suspension for a while and see if i can sort the inner arches out.  but i like the ride height at the mo so im going to have to meet somewhere in the middle with myself and the  damm car.  but if anyone knows of a method for me to roll my arches or knows of a company near bu to south wales that will roll my rear arches then get in touch.   cheers

new bump stops first! then
either machine your wheels (the tt offset is not quite right for mk3s ,mine used to do the same on tt rims)
new
or get them rolled somewhere  (i believe the dubfactory will be offering this service soon )

or try some different tyres,

when you say machine the wheels do you mean put them in the lathe and reduce the offset by skimming the rear of the hub on the alloy?  if so i just my be able to see a man about a dog and get this done.

Its not the ideal way of doing it and dont take much off
remember to check wheel bolts after ,so they are not too long,
