hey all
when i change gear in my mk2 8v gti
if im driving rather fast it seems to pop out of the exhaust
and also now and again car does not feel very fit when driving
and when i pump the accelerater it pops out the exhaust
and seems to be ok bit after that
how can i stop it doin this my white gti never did it

since i removed the centre silencer on mine it will pop on gear change under hard acceleration

Lucky gits! Got a full stainless system on mine and i don't get the popping noise :angry:
lol although on my old 1.3 mk2 i had a straight through stainless system with just a dtm back box. Used to pop so loud when i let off that it would send flames out the back and cause people to fall flat on their arse :grin: :laugh: :grin:
Just thought i would hijack the thread with my thoughts and experiences :wink:

Popping is caused by overfueling or unburnt fuel making it into the exhaust.
Check timing first.

My 8v GTi does the same on gearchanges under heavy accelerating and when backing off the throttle
have recently timing and mixture reset and it still does it

check your exhaust is sealed properly at the joints aswell this can cause it. i can get mine to pop if im acelerating hard however my timing etc and joints are fine

:nerd: If your exhaust is leaking (crack or whatever) this will make the car run rich (overfueling) and will have the same effect - simple exhaust check - put your hand over the tailpipe to block it (use a rag if its really hot) - the car should stall quite quickly, if not you've got a leak (you'll hear the air coming out of it :nerd:) if its a particulary fiesty car you might have trouble blocking the tailpipe :grin:

lol im scared to check my exhaust like that cos i dont want all the exhaust sealant crud to fall out lol but i dont think it leaks sounds cool when im mega booting it tho

if the "exhaust sealant crud" or "FireGum" does fall out its not sealing the exhaust anyway and beloongs in the bin :smug:
Is it just when you're booting it? - i think thats a golf thing :laugh:

yeah just when im booting it and i know its not really gonna fall out its sealed tight and i put exhaust wrap round my one problematic joint and its peachy now

my mk3 valver pops when u almost hit the limmiter, its got a decat pipe, could that be it?

exhaust sounds really sh!t and tinny
it aint standard backbox
ill check it tonite see if its blowing

as for vr6 conversion things are going pretty slow
at the moment not touched it for a long time
got a few debts to clear so i aint been able to afford
any parts for it
i got new power steering rack in dented chassis leg
had bay blown over so looks clean again
im in decicion on the chain i know it needs a new timing chain
i dunno weather ot get someone to do it while engine aint bolted in
or get it all running and take it somewhere

Reading this post has got me wondering now, my 91 8v pops a fair bit when its on over run going down a hill or going down through the box to slow down ?

i gotta agree with dub_dude... ive got a 1.3 with strait thru system..pops like gunshot.. wake the dead between every gear and everytime i lift off the gas.

:drool: I love that sound, that is a golf thing :cool: all the gti's i've been in have done it. My middle box has lost its ability to silence and it sounds great :grin: I'll be running it til it actually breaks or gets too loud to handle :laugh:

Mine leaks like a freaking biatch! But the popping does sound quite good, but really annoying...
Mine seems to pop when I'm going at lower revs too, but sounds amazing rally car stylee when booting it :evil:
So when I get a new exhaust for it, it will be something that sounds great when doing some and quietish when toodling around town.

Reading this post has got me wondering now, my 91 8v pops a fair bit when its on over run going down a hill or going down through the box to slow down ?

im guessing because there will be a decrease in back pressure which will mess up the fuel injection....and less back pressure will mean that the exhaust is leaving the engine will be at a lower pressure.....
havent got a f**king clue tbh....

That makes me feel better knowing that loads of others do it as well as mine, still didnt pop like my MK1 RS 2000 though :evil:

isnt it that your making the car less economical by, making the engine working at the same rate using the same amount of fuel but with a lower power out put??
like running round on flat tyres, your gonna use more fuel.

i put 2 rags in my exhaust today when car was running
it never cut out so exhaust must have hole in somewhere

Mine did it before I changed from std exhaust to the Milltek system and it still does it now. I hate it personally as it makes it sound like there is something wrong with the car! Also, the exhaust is all sealed properly and it is really loud once its warm. When cold it's hugely quieter. I wish I could get to the bottom of the popping and the excessive noise as I do a lot of motorway mileage (about 130 miles) every day.

Since i have put my new distributer on my car is popping! Sounds like the exhaust is blowing somewhere though...most prob' going to need the timing done and a part of the exhaust replacing :huh:.
