Have had some engine knocking coming from my 55 gti for a while and took it to my dealer. Engine knocks when at the clutch bite, when applying a bit of power to the engine-more noticeable if on a hill or more people in the car!
They changed the clutch and flywheel and said it was cure ! NOT!!! Put it into gear in the car aprk outside and did it straight away!
Went back in and they took it off me after having a drive with me and gave it back 2 days later with no change, saying they cant find the origin of the noise. (Both mechanics that previously came on seperate drives said thats not right and look puzzled!)
So i got passed onto the main Customer services, got the run around a little and firmnly put my point of view across regardless how much i think this car is awesome i didnt pay 25 grand to have a car that knocks and people say whats that when they hear it... and feel it througt the floor!!
After they took all my details they didnt ring me for 2 weeks to tell me exaclty what they said to me 2 weeks previously that due to the mechanics not finding a fault...there is no fault!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone find this damned annoying and frustrating yet!!!!
Anyone else had the same????
Need some help here!
-
Oh yeah, they let me drive their gti after saying their one does it and therefore its normal!!!!
Anyone had this!]
Please check your cars guys!
-
i had something like that but on a ford turned out was the hydrolics on the clutch system didnt effect the preformance and garage took about a month to figure out what it was, like yours they changed clutch etc... even changed the gearbox before they figured it was the hydrolics in the clutch causing it. i dont know a thing about the new 2.0 tfsi but its worth a look even to just rule it out.

Hi Lynx
Have EXACTLY the same noise on my o6 GTi. Its been like it from the day i picked it up 4 weeks ago but initially I put it down to the clutch bedding in. However when I took it to the dealer last week the service manager listened to it and confirmed that its not normal. Its in this week for 2 days to hopefully be sorted. The service managers' first thoughts were a dodgy thrust bearing. I'll wait and see if they fix it, otherwise may have to reject the car....
-
At least its not only me!!!
Let me know how you get on, thinking of going to trading standards myself as VW are just pushing me off saying there is nothing wrong.
Let them know about its not just you and that someone else tried and dont let yourself be fobbed off by them. Make them go to VW head off and ask about a technical enquiry and get them to ask if anyone else has had it and see what they say.
-
yep, I'll let you know - taking it in tomorrow morning. I notice the noise more when its a hot day aswell, almost as though something expands and makes even more noise - not sure if you've noticed this. I'll mention that someone else seems to be having the same issue and make it clear that if they're gonna have my car for 2 days I want it back sorted - no messing me about.
-
Got a call from VW to say they couldnt find anything wrong - 2 foreman and the service manager went in the car but couldnt hear any noise! this is the same service manager that heard it the week before. I must admit its been raining and quite mild today and you dont notice the noise anywhere near as much as when its a hot day. Anyway I picked the car up put it in gear and heard the clicking / knocking noise, went straight back in and asked the service manager to come out and listen. He acknowledged the clicking noise but said this was normal and this wasnt the noise hed heard last week! I was sure it was the same noise but louder!
Now Im getting frustrated!
Lynx - do you notice the noise more when its hotter outside?
-
Never noticed the hot weather difference, im not very impressed with VW over this. They seem to brush it off to quick!
I took my technician and service manager to one of the speed bumps and stopped against it then put it into gear and took it to the clutch bite against it so it was trying to get up it. The knocking got awful!
Now people may say dont do it...but try a hill start wand its loud...try with a couple of people in the car and it gets worse the more you put the engine under load.
Im waiting for another phone call from VW customer services see what they say then,
-
Exactly the same for me, hillstarts make the noise much worse. When you drove the other GTi that they let you try did it make the same knocking noise? If so then maybe it is normal... although its nothing ive ever noticed in any other car Ive driven. (cant remember my if the car i test drove did it or not)
-
it wasnt on the one i drove. I told VW customer services that it wasnt the fact that its normal its the fact that its too loud, annoying and not what you want on a 25 grand car! Told them it was a design fault! When i asked the service manager would he accept it he said no as well.
They just arent prepared to listen though which isnt good business really!
-
Totally agree, its not on at all.
To clarify, if the other gti you drove didnt make the noise, why do you think it might be normal? If the other gti did make the noise then it maybe a design fault but if its just on our cars then its surely an individual problem?
Im gonna take mine back in if i get time this week, i'll take a techncian out to some hilly roads to demonstrate it getting worse when the engine is under load...
-
The other gti they had there did it but not as bad, the showroom one i drove b4 i bought my one didnt do it mate. Didnt make myself clear earlier sorry mate.
Thing is i love the car and dont want to lose it but they are forcing me to either sell it or give it back!
-
Let me know how you get on with vw customer services mate, I'll keep you informed of any developments when I get round to taking my car back to the dealer..
Like you say, I love my car aswell but this annoying niggle is slightly ruining the ownership experience.
Quite glad that Ive found someone who has the same issue because of scanned a few forums looking for this and found nothing before your post. Could it be that we're a bit overly sensitive and all the gti's out there are making this noise - some to a greater extent than others?? who knows! but ive never experienced it on any other car ive had.
-
could be like the whole steering rack thing, nobody thinks anything of it unless someone says something.
Was gonna get the ipod thing done to mine soon but porb wont now until i get an answer of them.
Noticed in the US VW site that they do all the colour code bumper and stuff over there but still nothing here yet.
Wanted silver rather than black but the balck plastic bumper put me off
-
ive got black aswell, kinda thinking i should have gone for white after i saw one the other day. Ive also got the manual but now im wishing id specced dsg given this clutch noise!!
-
Yeah there is that.
Got mine as i had a mark 4 gti beforehand which id got cos my dogs bed fits in it great, he loves it looking out the back.Loved the new one as well ha ha.
Had to put him down yesterday so gutted as hell. Not sure what to do with my dog guard now either.
-
My car does this too, dealer thought it was normal and I have not persued it much further. May well do so now.
-
I would mate, its really getting on my nerves now and i get no joy from VW customer services, they dont help at all, keep asking me to get the dealer to get in contact with them! Surely they should do as its their company!
Just destroys the whole driving experience of a quality car!
-
hey lynx
you manage to get any further with customer services?
Ive sort of learnt to live with it but must admit every now and then think about pursuing it again. Its more a case of I cant be bothered going to the dealer again.
-
had no joy whatsoever, disgusted as a matter of fact, shant be buying a vw again after all this
