Title: sombody stole my wing mirrors
Post by: hcclnoodles on 14 May 2006, 11:38
Hi there

I have a golf mk4 and this morning when i went outside, i found that the mirrors had been taken.... The mirror units thenselves were intact with just the actual glass bits taken ??

Ive only had a VW Golf for 5 months now, Are Golf mirrors particularly valuable to your average scumbag druggie car vandal .....it seems they were very specific about what they wanted

I assume i will have to replace the entire mirror units now ???, does anybody have an idea of how much these will cost me to get hold of/install etc....

I dont want to ring the insurance just yet until i can find out how much it'll cost me ???

any help would be greatly appreciated

Gary

You must be able to buy these parts mate got to be cheaper than a new mirror someone like German Swedish French GSF parts

Sorry to hear that mate.

Right you can just buy the mirror glass seperate but as far as i'm aware from VW only. Make sure before you go down to volkswagen that you note if they are electric and heated or manual and if they had a slight blue tint to them or not. Also take your chassis number to them as they can put that into their Etka programme and it will tell them what is fitted to your car. They aren't cheap though. Drivers one is about £36 or summat and passenger £30 Something like that, I used to work for VW. When you come to fiit them they are a bit tricky. If they are electric & heated (90% of MK 4's are),  then there are two wire which have to be attached to the back of the mirror (this is for the heater element). They can be put on anyway round there is no specific positive and negative.  :nerd:

Used to sell these by the bucket load at VW! They are very sought after because they aren't a bargain lets say

thanks , i think they are the heated ones because as you say there are 2 wires dangling from the unit as we speak......

to put it bluntly, im absolutely useless when it comes to fiddly fitting jobs, so would it be worth my while, going to a garage to get them fitted ? (im scared of causing even more damage).....do they clip in or stick in ?

also, ive just spoken to the police, and they said that the same thing is happening to a few cars in this area .......i just cant understand

Below i have posted 2 pictures ie just taken so you can see the damage .....as you can see there seem to be some reminants of broken/severed glass in the circular thing, how does this affect the refit

Depending on the dealer they will sometimes fit it for you for nothing although they may charge you a small fee. They are quite fiddly and they can crack easily or if it isn't cliped in correctly they will fall out. Best bet to go down to your local dealer and have a chat with the parts department see what they say. Yeah they are heated looking at the pics. Not sure how the bits in the motor flange on the passenger side will affect the refit. You could try GSF though to see if they do them. When i work for GSF they didn't but that was a couple of years ago now. Do you live in London? Just looking at the street you live in, looks a bit like London.

Whats the point in them stealing the glass from wing mirrors?.

As far as i can see... There isnt one, other than to cause a pain in the @ss for someone else. Scum.  :lipsrsealed:  :undecided:

Not if they've broken the glass to take them out, which i thought you mentioned? (Or did i read it wrong?.)

Someones nicked them because they're very easy to get off.. 5 seconds per side if you know what your doing! which is why they went missing, someone who knew what they were doing needed some!!
new ones are dead easy to fit, they just push into place, by gently pushing the centre of the glass, and spreading the load, until they snap into place, if you feel uncomfortable doing this.. take them to a garage, probably cost you a drink!

Thanks everybody for your help

I have just been to VW Croydon and purchased some new ones (£76 for both). The guy in the parts section said to me that theyre selling bucket loads of these mirrors because people are nicking them and putting them on ebay. He said he's also seen the same customers coming in again and again (i hope that wont be me). He also said there is nothing anybody can realistically do to stop it happening

Id like to put a request out to anyone thinking of buying new mirrors from ebay to refrain from doing so , lets stop them in their tracks, and maybe these crimes will slow down
