Yes on the Car Phone Kits!
Plan on getting a Parrot BT kit installed when car arrives late July.
My phones : SonyEricsson K750i and Motorola V3I
-
Yes would be interested in both. Have thought of the parking sensors in the past but always chickened out as was not sure how big a job it is and do ont fancy letting some 16 year old monkey loose with a drill on my bumper.
-
lol
OK I'll do 'em!
Car phone first - sensors second!
Keep your eyes out for them!
-
bugger... fitted my nokia kit yesterday but didn't take any photos... could have helped you there!
-
both sound very useful!
-
I'm fitting the carphone kit tomorrow - weather permitting!
Posting will follow soon!
-
nice work doc
-
Thanks fella

I've been thinking about getting aftermarket park sensors installed on my to be collected GTI this Saturday. However, one thing that bugs me is the fact that the factory one's look nice and flush against the bumper or usually recessed. However, any after market one's are going to stick out a few millimetres above the bumper and I've seen some examples of this and it does look cheap. So, there is always the option of going for the Meta Targa SR2 which is the number plate fixing type - got 4/5 stars review by www.autoexpress.co.uk . I understand these can be bought from Halfords and fitted by them all in for £100. Anyone try these yet?

Take a look at these babys I fitted to my better halfs car.......

and here is the optional audio / visual display unit mounted in the headlining so you can see it in your rear view mirror - the numbers are reversed so you can see em the correct way in ya rear view mirror!

I think they are neater than my factory fit ones and were fitted by yours truly!
-
is that a parkitright kit?
-
Excellent work Doc! Those little sensors are quite flush actually! I think it looks like the "Steelmate PTS" variety you have there?
-
Top points for Zeb! lol!
Steel mate are the kit to go for!
-
Looks great Doc, so what kind of a job was it to fit the kit?
-
It took about 1 hour to fit start to finish but I was in a hurry so couldn't take photos.........
On the next one I do I will take pictures and post them here with instructions!
In the mean teme I will take some pics of her car to give an rough guide!
Cheers

Hey Doc! On your recomendation, I picked up the same kit from Halfords for £200 which includes installation and have my fitting booked for 10 June. I noticed that you have your sensors on the bumper lower down.
I suggested to the fitter today whether he would put them there too and he said it is a bit too low and may not pick up higher obstacles so he's going to fix them up higher in line with the number plate, which means they will require colour coding too.
Any adverse effect of having your sensors down there?
Also, fitter said he may have to take the bumper off, did you have to do this?
Cheers!

Thats great but I never recomended getting halfords fo fit anything....... the point of the guides is to help you guys fit your own gear instead of some no-brainer looser with a saxo 1.4!

Here we go......... OK so what if their to hi and cant pick up stuff thats lower? Plus the snsors can be angled slightly upwards with the newest kits. The sensors work fine there and they perfectly match the black lower section of the bumper! Why paint them when you need to??????

Nope I normally fit these to vans - lots of them and there lower still!
Also, fitter said he may have to take the bumper off, did you have to do this?
Nope I left it in place and pulled the wires up by the removing the rear lights his can be done if you fit them on the upper or lower of the bumper.
At the end of the day the kits cost around £100 so why not DIY it my man? At the end of the day you will be far more carefull than any halfords fitter.....
Sorry if I sound negative but I dont want your car messing up - where do you live? If you want to come over I will fit them for you (FOC) and we can take photos of the fitting for the forum!
Cheers

does the golf have "super hard bastard" metal reinforcement bar behind the rear bumper ala touran? If so, for god's sake... go lower!!
-
ILMAO and there also on the caddy van as I just found out
The things about 5mm thick ffs!
I suppose thats what your paying for!
-
so long as you found out in time! saves a lot of hard work

Looks great Doc, I like the lower mounting in the black valance as it means no painting is required. How hard is to it to drill the holes in the right place, that bit is a bit scary I reckon. I considered getting Halfords or someone else to fit for me but was too scared of some young guy with his vision blurred by his baseball cap ruining my car.
Any chance of a how to using words, I know you cant take pics now although I guess if you do someone elses car soon you can add pics. I would like to fit a kit soon to my car. Sadly I am a bit too far from yours to nip round as I'm in Northern Ireland.
-
Its dead easy to drill the holes - Simply buy and AUTOMATIC CENTER PUNCH from B&Q, then measure where you want your holes, Mark the holes with the AUTO C Punch and the drill the hole using the drill bit supplied with the kit!
I will be doing a "how to" when I get the time - Prob in the next couple of weeks - the last one took hours
IF ANYONE WANTS TO DRIVE TO LIVERPOOL TO DO THIS THEN I WILL GIVE MY TIME FOR FREE (ONCE)!!!

Never come across an auto dentre punch, how does that work? Is it not difficult to get all 4 sensors at exactly the same height to look right? I am fine with the electrical stuff altho not sure how easy it is to take the cables from the back of the sensors up to inside the boot or wherever you mount the control box and take the power feed from.
With your sensors mounted where they are do you get good coverage of objects to the side of the car eg, when reversing into a garage will it give good indication of how close you are to door opening and walls?

Hi there
You said............................
Q. Never come across an auto dentre punch, how does that work?
A. LOOK ON EBAY FOR automatic center punch - basically its a tool that helps you start the holes - you use it to start the hole by making a small "dent" in the bumper by pushing down on it - you could use a nail and hammer to produce the same effect - this small dent is then used to guide the drill bit.
Q. Is it not difficult to get all 4 sensors at exactly the same height to look right?
A. No you simply check and recheck all your measurements and use masking tape to help - then use the ACPunch and remove masking etc and check allignment prior to drilling - if its wrong you can still re-punch it. Once you have drilled the holes your stuffed so check and double check.
Q. I am fine with the electrical stuff altho not sure how easy it is to take the cables from the back of the sensors up to inside the boot or wherever you mount the control box and take the power feed from.
A. Dead easy - remove the rear clusters and 2 screws beneath them holding the bumper on then you can pull the top of the bumper backwards and fish the wires up to your hand then feed them through a grommet behind the rear bumper - this sound harder than it is - you then mount the control unit in the rear quarter panel and take your feed for the reverse lights from the 3 plugs that feed the tailgate which are hidden behind the N/S/R "C" pillar.
Q. With your sensors mounted where they are do you get good coverage of objects to the side of the car eg, when reversing into a garage will it give good indication of how close you are to door opening and walls?
A. Yes but if you wish you can mount them further out by 4 to 5 inches.
Hope this helps......a detailed guide will follow SOON!

Doc,
I am very interested in a fitting guide on these sensors and exactly what type of steelmate kit you would recommend. Your car phone guide was excellent
