Hi there
I have a 1.6 S mk4 Automatic, and whilst the pull/power/ooomph (whatever you want to call it) isnt the worst in the world, it certainly doesnt excite......
Selling the car and buying a GTI isnt an option for me unfortunately, so i was wondering what i could do to this car to give it a bit more power.. (chipping etc [?!?!])
Any help or advice on this would be greatly appreciated
cheers

Probably not what you want to hear, but you're much better off saving your cash for the future, when you buy your next car, as it will take thousands to get any more noticeable performance out of your current lump. Just my 2p!

ok thanks anyway .....its just that somebody told me something about a chip somewhere that could make a difference
cheers

Chip/remap probably wouldn't ake much difference at all..If anything an extra 5-8bhp..
I don't believe the cost of the chip/remap warrants this small increase. Your better off buying a stainless steel exhaust, which would give you similar benefits..
As mentioned before, i would save for a bit, then get a turbo (either diesel/petrol) then have it remaped...Could potentially get another 40-50 bhp on these models...Remember, the 1.6 isn't designed for all out speed, so brakes, exhaust, suspension will need to be tweeked..Not worth the aggro...IMO

In this months golf+ mag there was a section on RR days and a 1.6 was quoted with 114hp with a scorpion exhaust which is probably a cat back system. However it probably had more like an induction fit or panel filter aswell but not a bad increase. How come a gti is not an option?

Main reason being that i have a dodgy left knee and (unfortunately) find manuals a lot more of a pain (literally) to drive than autos, so itll have to be an auto and as far as im aware the highest auto in the mk4 range is the 1.6 (make that the only auto !!)
Point taken about the potential gains vs the financial implication .....i think ill just have to leave it ....after all its not too bad

If you want to make it feel more sporty look into upgrading the suspension, arb's and brakes. You'll never make it a quick car but you can still have some fun in it.

Although not much more powerful when i was looking for a golf im sure i saw a 2.0 gti auto.

if you did it was an import

Do they not make a 4-mo auto?

There is a V5 auto, the box probably suits that car.

Yep, seconded. Was just about to type this!
If I needed an auto, then this would probably be it. (170 bhp standard)
