mines been in & out of the car about 3 times this year what with steering racks, downpipes, anti-roll bars being fitted so im assuming its fine otherwise id like to think my mechanic would have mentioned it!!!
-
guess who spoke to soon!! was up speaking to the mechanic at lunchtime about a vibration im getting thru the steering
and what does he say....
glad u reminded me, the N/S catching nut on the subframe has broke its welds so it cant be tightened!!
so its go in tomorrow to get it welded again!!
-
Where is a subframe exactly? ???
-
its wear the wishbone rears bolts into.
just on this subframe problem, i've done a bit more research into it, mainly on clubgti and it turns out this is a common problem on mk2's.
ill give you some more info on monday when i get the car back. ive got a feeling this is what has been causing my knocking noise in the front of the car which i orginally thought was engine mounts
-
i origionally had mine plated to strenghen it up by some dodgy bloke trying to save me money but he then told me to get rid as it was now too strong and would not give in an accident therefor sending more shockwaves into the cabin.
but when i had it checked out by a vdud specialist he told me it wasn't stong enough and that was why the car handled like a boat!
mine origionally had three small holes in it
-
well i got mine welded today for ?40, car feels tighter obviously!
but the bloody vibration from the steering rack is still there
looks like its back to the garage on monday!
-
but the bloody vibration from the steering rack is still there
Could be a simple think like tracking out or wheels balancing weight has dropped off
-
nope its defo a weird one as the vibration comes and goes, you can go a drive as i did yesterday without it occurring but after going round a corner this morning the noise suddenly re-appears, then disappears after a few more corners!
-
i had that vibration.
When i got my tires changed the guy told me the front wheel was buckled and so he switched it over to the rear wheel.
Vibration gone ;D
-
it aint that either, all wheels are straight & true.
as i said - it comes and goes, and when it does appear, it only vibrates when the engine is under load!
bizarre, nowt quite sure what it is!
-
engine/gearbox mounts vibrating the crap out of the car?
worn bushes/joints no?
that is scary stuff :o
-
nope, its only started happening since the new rack went in, so its something to do with that - we just cant locate it!
-
Have all the subframe bolts been checked for tightness?
-
yep, its only after getting the captive nut on the driverside re-welded
thought this was the problem to begin with but the vibration is still there
-
My Mk2's doing that as well :S Scary stuff i put it down to the front wheels being out of balance/track :S
I'll get it checked out after xmas is over :)

Gambit was the nocking noise like some sort of rattling noise because ive got a rattling noise and its made me think? :o
-
nah it was a noise u get coming on & off the gas, just like a thump
same sound u get with a knakered engine mount
-
ohh right.
i think i know what you mean now Gambit. Engine mounts on mine need changing then :-\
-
I'm worried about this now since mine has done fumfty million miles!
has anyone got a picture of what we are talking about and where the problem occurs so I can check mine?
Cheers
-
i shall see what i can dig up
-
Has any one got a picture of this problem - I want to check mine over the xmas break?
