Title: How many miles from 1 full tank?
Post by: number_six on 04 December 2003, 04:36
Hello all

Just out of curiosity -

I'm really pushing my fuel tank guage to the red line to see how much I can get out of a full tank, and the needle is just about lining up with the red marker.  I've nearly done 300 miles so far and I've not really been flooring it. 170 of these miles were mainly done on long roads.  She is a 3 dr 1.8T GTi

Driving home from work is going to be a bit of a gamble but I'm going to try and get another twenty or so miles out of her yet.  I'll let you know the final milage.  Let's just call it petrol roulette.

How many miles have you done on one tank?

Well, I can get 500 ish out of mine, but then it IS a diesel!!

Aparently this is a bit pants (The diesel boys had a bit of a discussion a while ago and some guys were 650+!!!) but I blame my bad economy on high speed runs to work (95mph+) and very slow driving through London on the way home (Diesel economy is awful in town).

If I was running a petrol Gti Turbo I would be happy with about 350 per tank

I managed to get 360 miles out of my 1.8T but ran out of petrol about 1/2 a mile form the petrol station which was pretty scary as the car just cut out and the power steering went off.

I found that when the light goes on you can squeeze about 50 miles out of it.

Have you tried Optimax? This increased my MPG by a couple of digits but it costs 5p a litre more. I could feel a difference though...

I seem to be getting about 550 miles out of my 130 PS diesel but I've only had it just over a month so that will probably very a bit.

bowt 350 ish from a full tank but mines only a 1.8 20v (non turb) so you have to keep it wound up to keep rapid progress!! ;D, to be honest the only gains ive had out of optimax is probably a veryslight performance gain and a bit smoother i wouldnt say my mpg increased!

The most i ever got was 379 from my 8v mark 2, i was drivin in 5th everywhere and mosat of it was motorways. the petrol is well good if i keep it below 3k rpm, i averaged 33.6 mpg last tank tho.

OK, I was driving to work last night, going down some long dark quiet country road, and then all of a sudden the computer gives out that loud beep it does, scaring the sh*t out of me, and there was the warning fuel pump light saying 'Please refuel'.  Which was very polite of it.

Not risking any more miles now so I'm going to treat her to a nice tank of Optimax after 312.4 miles.

Have a good weekend.

In my GTi T 180bhp I tend to do lots of motorway runs and due to already having 6 points I dont play licence roulette on the motorways anymore. I tend to stick the cruise control to 80mph or less (have a lot of miles to do, so need to have at least a little speed and plenty of repmobile vectras and mundanos still go past me)

Anyway on long runs at 80mph I've achieved about 370 from a tank. This involves the car been sat in 6th, cruise control set at 80, not much use of the pedals, no quick braking or 'show off' acceleration. The computer tends to show average economy of 37mpg on runs like those.

Interestingly in my previous 1.8t 150's I tended to get 330miles per tank. Those cars didn't have cruise control and rev'd higher at 80mph due to only having 5 gears.

I think 80mph in my 150 1.8t was about 3700 rpm 5th  (cant quite remember) but 80mph in the 180 1.8t is 3200 rpm 6th

My first week with the car and out of my first full tank it is currently at 320miles and the fuel light came on on the way to work. So I'm guessing about the 350 mark, thats using Sainsbury's Super Unleaded - pi55 water in other words. She's also due for a service so maybe that has something to do with it? I'm quite dissapointed as I have been driving 'carefully' and only managed this, I used to tear the crap out of my Nissan 200sx turbo and still get 300 miles to the gallon, and that car is in a different leage completely...I got out-paced by a bloody MR2 this morning for gods sake. Need to get it chipped. Anyone tried the REVO thing at WheelBase in Hersham, according to thier website they give you a free trial...anyone any experiences? how long does the 'free' trial last and is it completely free?

Thanks.

The GTi 150 PDi (diesel) does its 0-60 and top speed a shade slower (minimal) than a GTi 1.8t 150 but the PDi has very strong torque so you get much faster mid range acceleration and you can be more lazy with the gear shift - ie on the motorway theres far less need to drop it down a cog to get fast acceleration than there is in a 1.8t

i used to be anti diesel years ago but things have changed!!! you get a 150pd gti yeah very quick, play with the ecu chip/remap/piggy back box and whaaayyyy even more and you get 45+mpg no matter how hard you drive as said standard torque figures are superb any way but a bit of playing does no end!!, hey if i aint got enough for an r32 in years to come then a latest spec pd gti will be on the cards im afraid!!!!, even though ive been a petrol head since the age of 16!!!

My 130 is quite quick but I?m still running it in. I wish I had thought a bit more about the 150.What are the difference in engine speck to get the extra 20 bhp?

Just get your 130 REVO'd!

I have to say that now my 130 is run in a bit, I actually prefer driving it to my 1.8T. I was driving my 1.8T on Saturday, following my other half in the 130 and I was struggling to keep up with her! (don't tell her that).

The only thing I'm not keen on is the body roll. Can someone with a 150 do me a favour? What colour are the little circles painted on the front and rear springs? These relate to the siffness of the springs appartantly and Iwant to get the stiffer ones for my 130.

As its a company car I don't want to get aftermarket ones incase I get a bollocking.

Dude, where abouts are these coloured circles and I'll go down to the carpark and take a look for you.

There are painted on the actual springs. They're about the same size as a 20p coin.

For the front, try looking up into the arch above the wheel. As for the rear, I could only see them by looking under the bumper at the back.

The ones on my PD130 are yellow and purple, where as the ones on my 1.8T are white and blue.

Sorry to be a pain in the arse, I just want it to handle better...

I've just been down to look at mine (sorry for the delay, I didn't see you'd posted again!) and my car is so fecking filthy I can't see any painted marks!!!

It will get a good wash and polish this weekend, including an underbody blast, so if you still need these colour coding details, let me know, and I'll post them on saturday for ya ;)

If you could have a look that would be great. I'd be curious to see what they are as the local dealer has quoted ?180 for a set of 4 springs!

Once I know which ones they are I can set about finding a set cheaper.

Back to the subject of how many miles to a tank, I got 450 miles out of my first tank of diesel, not bad seen as its still running in (and getting better every day). The best I ever got from my (now sadly departed) 1.8T was 350 miles! Hopefully the next tank will be well over 500 miles (well work will hope).

My 1.8t just gave me 375 miles at which point the refuel please message came up.  Just by sticking to the speed limits (mostly) and by using new shell v power.  Very pleased as I usually get 300 or less on normal unleaded.

Okay, Thats it, I'm using v power from now on.

I get about 330 from a full tank to the warning light.  I just done 700 miles this weekend so that was 2 tanks.  Did the first half on 95 octane and the last half on 99 octane (tesco, they dont sell tesco super up here in sunny dundee, so when I saw it, I had to try it).  But got the same each time.  Averager about 32-33 mpg over the whole 700 miles.

Must admit though, It was some pretty heavy motorway driving (The missus was doing about 80-90 for about 300 miles, while I was doing 90-100 for the rest, with a couple short trips to 120 ).

So I think if I was perhaps a little less heavy boots it woulda been better, but then again, I did dundee to sthingyhorpe in 4h 30 min which I was happy with, didn't want to be much longer anyway.

I do find driving style makes a huge difference.  You increase speed from 70 to 90 and use about 25% more fuel!  I reckon it is still worth using V-Power though even if you are going to spank it.  I worked out it is 7 p per litre more so I would have to get only 23 more miles out of a tank to break even.  As I mucn more than break even at 75 miles I shall carry on using it.  Let us know how you get on with it!

Title: Re: How many miles from 1 full tank?
Post by: xs2man on 14 September 2006, 03:15
Will do.  I was at Tesco today, and were 2p per litre cheaper than everywhere else today, and with the missus paying, and that I couldn't be arsed driving the 4 mile to shell, I filled up there.  Buit the next 3-4 tanks at least will be on v-power.  My last 3-4 tanks were 330 miles, approx, so that should be a good indication...

I do boot it quite often though   as I am coming off at least 3 sh!t slow staright diesels, lol.

I know what you mean mate!  I have come from a long line of standard Fords, after 5 months I am still like a kid with a new toy every time I spin that turbo up.  Makes such a lovely noise epecially with the window down when your in a tunnel or something!  Did a "high speed" run on the motorway today of about 14 miles then drove sensibly for the last two and still got a respectable 33 mpg.  Good stuff this v-power!
