This car is my daily driver alongside my 16v. Fancy turning it into a rat look golf. The car looks better in this picture but the paint is flaky, dull and the odd rust spot here and there. What ya reckon?

Depends what you mean by rat look.
-
Slammed, smoothed, wide wheels, usually small bumpers, etc.

Up to you matey. I apreciate the coolness of the rat look but everyday people are just gonna think your scruffy. That puts me off.
-
i do like the grey rat look mk2 on e38 and was really tempted but its like what is said above if it ordinary people they will just think it is scruffy but to us i looks good.
-

A couple of years ago, I saw a slammed Mk1 that had ALL the paint removed.. everything gone! and allowed to go rusty... one of the coolest cars I have ever seen.. anyone out there know of it?

if you wanna go Rat Look mate go for it! alot of everyday people look at cars like ours and just think either, god thats an old car or thats a boy racer, but it isn't their opinions that you should give a sh!t about!!
-
in my opinion rat look should be left to the aircooled lot. and i think if more modern cars are made to 'look' rat look, they often look like they are trying to be rat look. its a hard thing to pull of and get right. at the end of the day if you want to spend effort getting your car looking a certain way i can't see the point in wasting all that time to make it look crap.
i also think alot of people go rat look as its an easy way to give you car a 'style' when all you have to do is a bit of bothced painting and throw a load of crap at it....
-
Im afraid i agree with joe here..... may be able to pull it off with a mk1 golf though.
-
yeah, an early mk1 with rusted chrome bumpers, etc
anything newer would just look awful, i think

I think some of those rat look MKII's look pretty damn cool, some of the others just look like old MKII's I see on my way to work everyday!

I hate the rat look. Make it a Euro minter.

I think you have to put this subject into context! there are cars out there that are completely beyond restoring, what many of them do have though is an MOT.. and thats its lifeline to be on the road for a couple more years, VWs, and thats all VWs seem to get away with this look, and its not as easy as you might think to get the desired effect.. and I believe that there is space in ALL of the VW scene for people to go in that direction, and make no mistake, some of the biggest, and most photographed crowd pullers at Stanford last weekend were ratted dubs! not everyone has 50-60k to throw a 23 window split

RAT RAT RAT!
Its your golf do what you want with it, I say go rat though

Thanks for all this imput guys n girls!
It's a tough one this. All the comments made are very true. So what i'm thinking is a cross between a ratter and a non ratter  Basically the paint isn't actually that bad after looking at it properly! So i was thinking:- slam it on coilovers, slap some small bumpers on it, smoked cross hair crystal headlamps, not sure on 4 headlamp on 2, debadged (which i've now done), some gti steelies but leave the paint as it is. Decissions decissions...

Sorry mate but the only opinion I get is "that's a clean Golf!!!"
The Golf was "The thinking persons car" back then and it was so successful because it never at any point during itÂ’s production obtained the usual stigma. You could be rich or less well off and still own a Golf GTI and for that reason the Golf obtained a hell of a lot of admirers. My G60 Syncro is almost OEM (Getting there) http://www.global-glader.com/Martin_Allen_Gallery.htm and the amount of people that stop me in the street and comment is phenomenal. 20-70 year old seems to be the spectrum of age. Granted if you slam the thing on 17 inch spinners, tint the windows and play core drum and base whilst wearing a Burberry cap and smoking a ‘JÂ’ youÂ’re gonna get labeled. Please do not destroy what looks like a salvageable Golf. Rat look only looks good on early small bumper base models and if IÂ’m totally honest, rat look should be left to the air-cooled fraternity. Sun bleached logos on a SoCal splitty is class but on a UK water-pumper itÂ’s just plain wrong, but thatÂ’s just my opinion. Rat look a Golf and youÂ’ll get £50 when you sell (or scrap it), rat look a splitty and youÂ’ll get phone calls from every part of the globe. Rat look Golfs???Â…itÂ’s like finding a toe nail in your Monster MunchÂ…just aint meant to be

Standard matey cos its a daily driver
