.. a mk3 dash and all the bits that go with it. It just took me 3 hours to pull it out of a mk3 driver at the local scrapper. Lucky for me someone had all ready taken the 'box out so I could stand in the engine bay to undo things.
There's about 30 bits that make up the dash including all the blanking plates, heater vents and such. About 400 screws and clips that hold it all together (no wonder the mk3 is heavy!) all in all it cost me ?45 including the heater matrix that he wants back if I don't use it and the dials and the loom so I can solder the mk3 and mk2 together so I can hook up the switches.
I grabbed the main bulkhead too. most of the dash was bolted to it so I guess I need that. Just requires a bit of cutting to squeeze in and bolt to the sides :)
I shall take piccys when it's all laid out in my garage. atm it can stay in my boot until tomorrow when I unload.
Now I'm going to have a shower and collapse before I had to goto work for 4 hours
the life of a dubber!

nice 1 dizzie, youll have to take step by step pics when you install and set up a how to guide for other members that may wanna see how yav done it!! ;D
-
I intend to. I've found 2 'how to' guides on the web, but nothing really step-by-step showing all the pitfalls and really hard bits. as far as the pulling it out goes you just have to remove all the screws and pull. then find another screw you missed and pull again. oh look, there's another 2 there. lol. the mk3 has so many hidden behind push in covers.
-
Dizzy this will be very interesting mate. Ive seen the 'how to' guides on the net but there not very detailed.
plz plz take details of the heating system because ive heard you have to channel your own heating to the vents.
Good luck ;D
-
hey i've got one of them! lol
i need a 'new' bit tho, i put a little crack in that bit where the central heater vents are at the top.. not serious.. but its buggin as i did it when i was fitting my new head unit

u got pics overseer? Does the mk3 dash look good? does it squeek/rattle when you go over bumps?
just asking coz my mk2 dash squeeks where the fog switch is VERY ANNOYING! >:(
-
I'm still confused where the fog switch is on the mk3. you can pull the light switch towards you. is that the rear fog switch?
How to wire up various switches would be a god send if you've got them Overseer. I grabbed the loom so I've got the plugs
-
lol.. guys.. if u didnt notice i have a mk3 :)
i have a rattle over on the right i need to find.. but i'm hoping that it was a can of deicer i removed from the door pocket.. gotta remember to try again
dizzie.. ya got it, the fogs are twist to full beam, then pull out :)

cheers overseer. Now to figure out how to wire that little lot up.
Here's a piccy of it laid out on my bedroom floor with my old heady in there to fill to space.
I don't think I'm gonna be able to wire up the mk3 clocks to the mk2 loom. so I'll look into leaving my white dialed clocks that glow blue at night in. The new oil pressure gauge I bought last week will have to move to the A pillar on a double pod with the oil temp gauge soon to arrive so the boost gauge can sit next to the headunit in that little 'made for' space.
Due to the new Kenwood MASK stereos having the controls stuck out on the back of the blank panel it leaves a couple of lines out of view when mounted high up in the mk2. Hopefully in this dash that won't be a problem. I also plan to mount my in-line bass controller in one of the blank covers by the heated window switch. the HWS should be easy enough to wire up as I'll look what the mk2's is like and just solder on the new plug sourced from the dashless mk3. ;D
I'll be writting a huge article on how to do this for all you people out there that are thinking about it so don't worry* I sugest if you are thinking about a mk3 dash swap then go take it out yourself and learn how it came apart. that's half the battle knowing exactly what goes where. also make sure you get everything that's there. I'll pop back out to the scrappy tomorrow and take a pic of the car I took the dash from to show you what you need to take.
-
what year mk3 is that from?
and was it a gti?
i got extra buttons in places where they couldnt be on that dash.. like for the heated seats,
(its very similar tho)
btw are u missing the sliding blanking plate for the diagnostics socket cover? (next to the ashtray?)
i'll get some shots of mine soon... need em to point out where switches go when ppl ask anyways ;)
-
it was from a M reg Driver. not a Gti. No MFA button on the stalks. I like the '90 spec MK2 stalks anyway. I think I got just about everything from the mk3 when I gutted it.
no I just found that. thanks for saying it slid on. It had me foxed trying to get it on there. back on now :)
-
OMG :o
how mutha fscking great!!!!
The pins have the same numbers on the mk2 heated rear window switch as the new mk3 one does.
that makes the rewiring piss easy ;D
-
dont think it should be too hard any way dizzie if you got the loom from the mk3!!, how does the mileage work on the mk3 its digital aint it?? dose it work off a counter or cable!!!, that could be a bit of a bind!! if it works off the counter/sensor type system youll need the sensor form the gear box, i think any way!, i had a yuk yuk astra sri many many years ago and banged a gte digi dash in, ha dno cable so i had to go back and get the thingyer/sensor form the gear box of the same car as would match with any other!, dunno if similar on vw?
-
Be good to see it all in when its done dizzie. Does it go in without cutting any of it off ?
-
you have to peal back the dashboard finishing near the windscreen and cut under that for a snugg fit.
-
basically yes. you have to cut the sides down a bit (cos it's too wide) and then trim it up where it meets the windscreen. once that's done and you can hold it in place it's time to attach the support beam. with that in you can practically bolt it in. there's the small task of linking up the heating tubes and drilling more holes in the bulkhead for it to come through. I really want to get the loom spliced together before I bolt/weld the supoprt beam in. at least everything's out of the way then so I can work easier.
Whilst collecting a wing from VW today I asked if there were any diagrams to aid me wiring up the mk3 clocks, but I need the VIN number to do that. Back to the scrappy then.
-
right. Found a wiring diagram on the net and spent the last hour working out what goes where. I think I've got it now. The miles must count off the speedo cos there's no separate wire for them. I don't think there is anyway. Most of them like the indicator, high-beam, etc lights are just power up and earth jobbies. I'll wire up a 12v soon to test this theory...
Now that I've got this far it's looking fairly easy. (famous last words)
The Vehicle speed sensor I need to register the speed... can I just take one off a mk3 in the scrappy?
-
I think you might have to buy one. If you can get one of a MK3 then its a brucy bonus.
Where would this sensor be located on the mk3? Gearbox?
