Ive just got my hand on a mk2 8valve on J plate its a bit ruff but it will make a fine project car and for ?500 notes whos complaining. Anyway 1 of the many niggly little jobs that need sortin on it is the heater fan, its as dead as disco! Ive had the trusty test lamp on it and the supply to the switch is ok and so is the supply to the fan unit. now is there something im missing before i go out and spend some of my hard earned on a new unit?

you can replace the voltage regulator/resistor on the side of the motor for buttons.
or just nab a 2nd hand unit from a scrappy ;)
-
is it likely to be the resistor then m8? you seem to know your stuff. Is it a common fault?
-
If it is just the resistor thats gone, then the fan will work on full speed only. I think you need a new fan unit.
-
doesnt work at any speed, bugger it I'll get on the blower to Smashing VW in Leeds see wot I can get a tested 2nd hand unit for any ideas wot I should be payin?
-
if the car has been lying then water can get into the blower and over time it'll seize
take it out and have a jeff duke at it

I had that same problem mate. Dont buy a new one without cleaning the motor out first.
Mine was very dirty and cloged inside.
I took the unit to bits (easy job) and cleaned the two contacts that are under the small springs. You will know what i mean once you have opened it.
While your here grease the unit up.
Hope that workes mate :)

As blue MK2 said clean the motor out first as it gets clogged up with debris and stops working after a length of time.
When its out run it off the battery if possible to see it that gets it going.

thanks guys I will strip the unit 1st chance I get by the way modulator my mk2 is identical to yours
