Title: Gearbox problems

I've just bought a Golf Mk3 16v with 111,000 on the clock. I have trouble getting it into first gear, once it is in it is fine and all other gears are also fine. It takes a few attempts to get it into first. Any help really appreciated!!

Gearchange cables could be worn or out of adjustment.

Any ideas on how to adjust these? Could it be the gearbox?
