tan leather anyone? if only i had £450- that fellas now got a proper bargain
-
It's terrible
I don't like any MK1 / 2 's but that one is just the worst!
-
I don't understand that remark AT ALL!!
That is by no means the worst mk2 ever seen, if you want to see that go and look for the lambo doored/ E36 fronted monstrosity...
TBH, someone got a bargain, 16valves and a retrim, maybe the body needs a bit of work, but it is very tidy for a £450 car.

Please... Drive before you assume, looks isn't everything. Saying that though, Mk2s are probably the sexist GTI ever made.
-
yep, mk2 gtis in my opinion are the best ones, power to weight ratio and their handling characteristics are so much better than mk3s and mk4s.
I think you would get bored of a 1.4 very quickly, if its insurance that your worried about, have a chat with martinb on here, he works for HIC and they can sort pretty good prices, when it comes for my renewal, I will be calling him about it. I have a mk2 GTI 8v, and is the funnest (if thats a word) car I have driven, I paid £750 for TPFT insurance and I'm 20, so it isn't too bad.
Remember, with the refinements they gave the mk3, they gained loads of weight.
Try to look at and drive a mk3 GTI, and you'll find its a much quicker, more involving drive than the 1.4. With better suspension the mk3s come a little closer to mk2s in terms of handling too.

wat do you drive?

he's looking at a 1.4 boat...
-
hehe lol! just seemed like an overly harsh comment thats all.........
-
thats what i thought, tbh its a fairly clean looking mk2, and £450 for a valver is pretty damned cheap...
-
think i know where that interior came from
looks alrite

Sorry guys, i didnt mean to offend anyones car. I just really hate the look of MK2's. From the back, they don't look bad at all, but it's just that terrible grill. I think it makes the car look very old and quite ugly.
Is there anyway to change the head lights on a MK2 to look like an MK3?
I don't own a car at the moment, but i'm looking for an MK3. Got about £850 to spend. Any idea's?
BTW, its a first car, so 1.4 maximum.
-
yeah you could with a lot of grafting i suppose. why you would wanna make your design icon of a mk2 look like a thames barge is beyond me tho
opinions are fine mate but for a second post thats a bit ott!!
try and get as late a model mk3 as u can as ive heard the early ones are a bit prone to rust n leccy probs. should be able to get something for 850 tho.
on the other hand u could get a mint (ish) mk2 if u searched around for that money..........

Apprecaite the advice mate, but I'm strongly against the look of the mk2. My ideal car would be something like a Peugeot 206, or an Golf mk4 if i could afford it, so that should give you the kind of picture i'm aiming for. Although an MK3 may not be as stylish as a 206, it's certainly not bad for the money.
I've been buying the auto trader for 2 months now trying to get a MK3, but i just can't find one i like for my money. I found one the other day, it was perfect, but then after me looking at it, and getting all excited, he phones me and tells me he's not selling anymore?
Appart from the Auto trader + Ebay, wheres the best place to look?
-
leg pull alert.........
was playing lol thats wat the ....... mean
try the for sale section at the bottom of the forum?
also local papers stuff like that
sometimes garages get things in ass part exchange would be worth ringing vw dealer near u and just asking the question
dont bother buying autotrader just look on the website

I paid £400 for my valver to a dude who had stripped its factory black leather...and so mine had 4 door seats (no recline) and a mix of rainbow and stripey box trim. would love to get another leather interior but jeez they aint cheap :undecided:

hey that top one looks like my car!......alot!
-
In my opinion, they look terrible. So square and ugly. The front grill looks like a peice of scrap with a few round  headlight slapped on.
again, only my opinion
-
Ok fair enough point.
I'd have a mk1/2 if they had more modern security features. Most importantly of all an airbag. TBH the MK3 is 'square' and is less attractive than a mk1 or 2.
I'm sure you know that German cars are very big, square, good quality and very Germanic. Even the new ones ! That's the appeal I think. They're very unique.
French cars are cheap, tinny, disposable, common, never trust the electrics !, Very typically French in sleek style (to the point of being a ladies car!), and to he honest I wouldn't give them a a second look.
Only my opinion mind !
-
and french cars tend to crunch up like tin foil if hit at (apparently) 20mph:

-
More like someone kicked a football at it !!
Why is he on here if he hates early Vdubs ?!!!!
French cars aren't that great, they look like they'd blow over in a gust of wind !
Better than a mk2 ?!!...don't think so !

HAHA!!
206s suck hairy donkey dong...
-
he's looking at a 1.4 boat...
TBH the 1.3 mk2's were 'boat like' because they were soooooo slooooowwwww. :lipsrsealed:
-
so that would mean a mk3 1.4 is more like a barge, then...
-
Hmmm,... a safer barge maybe ???
The body shells are so heavy, and the engines are old technology, but we love 'em !!!
-
oh well, at least this discussion isnt the usual 'mk2 8v or 16v' beeyatchslapping!
-
god, dont get me started on the 8v vs 16v
-

Hehe.....lets NOT go this road AGAIN!!!
(8v all the way )

TBH, if you're on that sort of limited budget, you'll never get a concourse class show car, but you can get a decent car that drives well. And if you're a young driver, it'll be cheaper on insurance if you don't have a ton of mods on the car.
So get yourself a car that feels good to drive, cos that's where it really counts. It's certainly what I prefer.
You're not going to spend all day looking at the grill saying it's rubbish, you'll want to be out there enjoying driving the car.
A Mk2 in good condition will probably handle better than the equivalent Mk3 because the Mk2 is lighter and more agile. The Mk3 always feels heavy, and it's only when you get the bigger engines that the car gets quick.
btw: If you don't happen to like the round headlights on a Mk2 Golf, you can either fit rectangular Jetta lights or Golf Rallye lights.
On here, it seems that the popular first car route is the Mk2 1.6 Driver, add tasteful mods, perhaps a change of grill and lights, lowering a bit, put on some alloys and wait till you've built up some no-claims bonus.
You can do worse than to drive one of each, then you can say that you prefer one car to the other, as a drivers preference not just to look at.

MK1's and mk2's have more street cred than most other cars on the road today! If you dont like mk2's then you need to buy a french piece of sh!t mate  There is something very wrong with you

second page of this thread and I have read enough!
you act like the mark 2 was in the cast of Alien 3 or something!
and as for a 205GTi, i would rather get a bus pass, held together with spit. I think they're no oil painting to be honest, the look cheaply made from every angle!
-
Yeah, but that was the beauty of 205GTis, so flimsy it was great fun to drive, but the build quality was just so crap, I had a cracked exhaust manifold on mine, and you try and find a replacement for it that isnt cracked...You can't!!
It was too twitchy in the wet tho, and I had it too early in my driving life, I have my mk2 GTI too early in my driving life, too, but it feels much stabler than the 205 ever did. (I never lost it in the 205, but came close many times)
IMHO, the mk2 is the second best looking golf, behind the mk1 and one of the best looking (and timeless) cars from the 80s.
I drove a 16v mk3 recently, and didnt enjoy it, it just didnt give the feedback or handling my mk2 has. The only mk4 I've driven was a 1.4 16v and thats no good either (although I'd kill for the dashboard from it to be in my mk2)
The lack of driving aids that mk2s (GTI) have make it such a great experience, and yes, there are better looking, faster cars out there, but I wouldn't swap it for any of them (although 200sx s13 would be tempting, RWD action..)
-
Golf  Best thing i ever invested in is my Mk 2 16v, would never part with it.
French cars  My opinion stated
-
I would still ragther have that quality feel that you get from a golf and not anything french!
-
yeah, i agree, the only complaint that I really have with mine is that the interior is really dated, if i can sort that then I'll be happy...
-
i have had 4 french cars and would not get another one unless it was a new clio 197 sport
sh!t what have i said
-
lol
i bought my mk2 cos i liked the petrol filler cap...............
-
it is a great filler cap...
-
one of the best even :smug:

I don't like any MK1 / 2 's but that one is just the worst!
