Title: GTI forum opinions on a few problems......
Post by: b4rks on 28 April 2006, 13:00
Chaps,

Been reading through a lot of the posts on here, bought an 8v GTI Mk3 (L reg) a few weeks back, and after driving it, a few problems have become apparent which I'd like your opinions on before I start giving my money to mechanics. Ok:

1.  The old girl cut out a few times after driving it hard for about an hour, but that seems to be the infamous '30' relay, so I think I'm happy there.

2. The power steering.  In the wet every now and again the power steering stops functioning, I'm putting it down to a loose belt, but more importantly than that, even in the dry if I'm doing 5mph or less when the wheel is turned it makes a loud grinding noise, and although the wheels turn it seems to do it in judery stages. I've been told this is most likely the power steering pump, but as they're pretty pricey I'd like any further opinions (the car did come with 16" alloys I'm wondering if the extra resistance of the wheels has caused problems).

3. And here's the biggy.  There is a whistling noise coming from the engine somewhere.  It sounds almost as if there is a dump valve fitted!!  But I promise there isn't a turbo :)  The garage have checked the manifold and said it's fine, but friends seeem to think it's that.  With the bonnet up, and reving the engine via the throttle cable to around 2.5 thousand then letting go, as it downrevs the whistling noise is apparent.  There does seem to be a slight loss of power, but that might just be me expecting more from my 8v - I don't know.

Any help really would be grately appreciated, I want to get the old girl running like it should, but don't want to start chucking money at it if it's un-economical.

Thanks

B4rks.

The whistling could be your oil breather pipes on the left side of the cam cover. The 90 degree bend is where the weak bit is, and often wears through..... Have a look at that first mate...
