Hi,
As in subject I need to take my gearbox out, as I am doing an engine replacement.
Does anybody know what I need to do to get this out?
-
I would just leave it in if your changing the plant, no need to go to extra work removing unecessary items
-
Thats what i thought just lift them both out together on an engine hoist
-
Are you changing the lump for a bigger unit?

I bought a replacement 8valve engine off ebay, a newer one with less miles.
I need to swap it over. Should I remove engine and box, then take box off when out of car?
Also, do you know what else I will have to do to allow engine to come out. Will I have to disengage the drive shafts?
Thanks for the help guys

at the risk of sounding like a complete arse. if your asking questions like this you might want to get the help of someone who knows what they are doing. or get someone else to do it! its not impossible, in fact its pretty straight forward but at the same time its not something you want to do on a whim.
it'd be easier to take the complete engine out, swap box onto new engine put back in. you will need to detatch the drive shaft, the exhaust, the wiring loom, coolant hoses etc etc etc. its easier to take it out the front with the whole front end removed. then when its removed it should be pretty obvious what needs to be undone to take the gear box off. good luck!

Thanks for that.
Im not a total novice, and I do understand most of it. The difficult part is removing rusted parts, the rest looks fairly straight forward enough.
Again, thanks for the advice, I just need to know which approach to take first.

Think about buying a lightened flywheel to put on while you're there, and obviously a new clutch is advisable.
Its also a good idea to fit a new input shaft bush, seal & release bearing onto your gearbox while its out! Oh and a new gearbox end cap too, as the old one will never seal again. I'd also get 2 bottles or Redline MTL gear oil in there too :)

Are these things that I really need to put on.
I am trying to save money and get it up and running again.

not really, but if you dont at least do the input shaft bush & seal, it can start leaking gearbox oil and shaft your clutch. The release bearing can be done at any time as its accessible when the gearbox is installed.
Its up to you of course :)
