I get a rattle from the engine on starting the car, it's only when firing it up, it sort of sounds like a diesel firing up...I had a lookl under the bonnet and the cover (the big plastic cover that has the 20V Turbo writen on it) is lose, the top screw (closest the windscreen) is loose and it woblles...I think this causes the rattle...is this plausible or could it be something else?
sorry for all the posts but new to the Golf GTi. :) :)

ive got 20v non turb, no rattle on mine on start up, but ive read something that this is quite common on the mk4 20v's check ukmk4 site from links page

Cheers mate, eased my mind, as long as it's a common fault and the engine is not on it's way out..i'll do some investigation over the weekend.
-
Errr.where is the links page? :-[

hey,
I got a 1.8T and mine also makes that diesel sound when i start it up. you had any luck in resolving it?
thanks.

What oil are you using? maybe it just needs a flush and a change.
-
Mines only 2 months old!!!
-
It could be clutch dust in the starter motor which is common on cars with bout 80 k on the clock but nothing to worry about only the noise :)
85 Quid will get you a new starter motor
-
i think your worrying about nothing!!!, should be ok if that new and then youve got warrenty aswell so RELAX and enjoy!

I have a Seat Leon Cupra, 2003 mod with the 1.8T engine, mine does it most, but not all mornings, or if left to stand for a long time.
I think you will find it is 20 hydraulic valve lifters getting the initial fill of oil.

Must admit, the first time I heard it, which was not long after the car was new, I nearly **** myself ;D

I have a 1.8T Mk 4 with 60,000 on the clock
It had the diesely rattle at start up - worse after being left for a while
My local dealer (Lindvale Southend) diagnosed it as being the cam chain
tensioner not retaining oil pressure.
They changed it under warranty ( I just sneaked in on the time and
mileage limits).
Now it is much better and seems to run a lot smoother too although
that might be the BP Ultimate gas. Third tank full -expensive but good.

I know its nowt serious! its just that ive been driving an oil burner 306 for the last 5 years, and ive finally got my hands on a nice quiet petrol, but everytime i start it up it sounds like my old car! :D
But i'll put up with it coz i love it!!!

Well mine is 2 days old and I also note a slight rattle (diesel like) on first start. It's a petrol 1.6.
I also have a stranging ticking on the left hand side as you look under the bonet at low idle ???
I guess who cares, it's under warranty!
