Title: sealed or non-sealed suspension kit?
Post by: golfmk2boy on 25 April 2006, 13:39
Hi,

I have just called motorworld for the suspension kit (spax vsx) for my golf mk2 8valve gti.

The guy asked me whether I needed a sealed or non-sealed kit.

I have no idea what this means.  Any ideas?

only thing I can think of is he means if you want front shock inserts, or the whole strut?
If so go for the whole strut, wont cost much extra if anything.

The sealed version is the full setup whereas the non sealed is the insert only.

I need a picture of the standard setup to send them.

Does anybody have one?

just get the whole strut and bin your old struts far less hassle

Get the whole strut unless you can make a decent saving.

If its a piece of cake then why not get the inserts? it will be a little bit cheaper.

well its still more faffing about, and usually getting the complete strut doesn't cost much more money.  Plus you get a complete new shiny strut rather than having to re-use the rusty old one, and there is a chance the insert wont come out of your old strut!

What about camber? thats easier to maintain if not using an aftermarket strut, also i've never known an insert not to come out.

Hi,

I am thinking of getting the blistein kit from eurocarparts.com.  IT says it lowers the car by -40mm.

Since I have a golf gti 8valve which apparently are lowered -20mm already would the kit lower it a further 20mm?

I have 17's on  my golf, and I will be getting g60 arches aswell.

Can anyone tell me whether this will work?

thanks!

camber will be just as adjustible, the holes will be the same size surely. Its the bolts which you can change for more camber adjustment.

Yes camber will still be adjustable, but thats not the point, if you re-use the original strut it will easier to keep to original fitted position with marks, so no camber adjustment will be necessary.

Ah I see what you mean, but if you replaced your suspension with a lowering kit you'll have to get it checked anyway, lining up the marks isn't going to help you!

True, anything more than a 25mm drop would make the marks useless
