I'm always looking around the forums at the cars for sale sections with various generations of the beloved golf, many deciding ebay is the best form of generating the most cash back after several thousands
spunked spent on them.
It seems like the value of these heavily modified cars is seriously low with very little interest from the buyers. Where as a relatively standard mk2 can fetch good money with a decent amount of interest.
Is it purely down to people wanting to do their own thing and is breaking the best way when it's time to move on?

its a real shame.because the modified golfs are worth less than a standard one people do brake them to get ther money back but all it does is make the population of golfs get smaller.i cant reallly moan as i bought an unfinished project for silly money!i say silly money cos all the parts i got from it very worth ther weight in gold but the guy must have been gutted! :embarassed:

when you modify a car to your taste its probably hard to find someone who wants exactly the same car so will always appeal to a niche market. you also get people who assume a standard car has probably had an easier life than one owned by a 'modifier'.
then if the car was a well known feature car, or one that was big on the show scene you've got the stigma of whoever owned it before. for example janet edwards rallye. if she ever sold that it would take years and alot of money to change it before people stopped refering it to 'janet edwards rallye'
so your almost better off buying a half finished project or starting from scratch and making it your own. shame though...............

Worse aswell when us VW modified car owners take much better care than some one who runs them into the ground. All the modded cars i have seen on ebay just seem to keep going around never getting sold.

Interesting this, I'm looking for a G60, and the ones that have had loads of work done do seem to be for sale for a fair bit more..... A more standard one is a grand or more less, but having said that the modded ones tend to have new/refurbed and re-worked chargers/pulley chip etc, which does cost a bit to do.

I think there is a growing movement towards standard cars, in the case of Mk1s/2s Its inevitable really, many of the current moded cars now being done for the 2nd or 3rd time round.. just how many butchers cock-ups can you bare to put right.. nothing is as sweet as a virgin GTI

youre dead right and mine was one of them will full vag history 2 owners the lot untill it got hit!twice now!! so i thought bugger it,its a catd write off lets mod it!!

The general impression of modded cars is that they're expensive to insure and run/maintain as they're non-standard, they have probably been thrashed by whoever owned them and there is often no guarantee of the quality of work done on them. I guess some people just don't want to stand out from the crowd as well.
All this makes it a pretty limited market out there to sell to, plus most people will want their own touch on a car if you go for a modded one

Mine is only very slightly modified....I actually went out to try and find the best one I could for the money I had.
In my experience, the standard examples tended to have more mechanical problems then their modified conterparts......
I would rather go with a modified Golf from someone who knew their stuff than a standard that has been butchered at every opportunity by some jack the lad garage outfit out to con people with no knowledge of cars at all.....After all cosmetic changes can be adapted to suit whereas the engine is what keeps the thing going

My GTI is about to get a full hit! Great base to start with though, 89, Jade LN6V, 1 previous owner, full VAG/sh, ZERO rust, 65k, perfect interior, origional Blaupunkt, even got the origional "MASSINGBERD OF HARROGATE" number plates! and unkerbed BBS alloys.. body has minor dents and scrapes, and the paint looks a little tired, although all origional... only mods will be 15in steels, and a very subtle sus drop, with the new springs re- enamelled in black!
