hi guys, im new to the forum, i own a 88 mk2 8v after previously owning a corrado 16v and a mk2 polo coupe. i will introduce myself officially when i can get some pics up!
anyway ive got a problem with my sunroof on my mk2 and wondered if you can help. its a slide one not a tilt and slide
the sunroof opens but it on closes about half way, as it is closing the handle makes a slight clicking sound
once the roof hits half way the handle stops and wont go any further, (i dont wont to force cos it might break!)
any ideas what the problem could be, snapped cable? dodgy runner?
ive found out too that to get the sunroof out you have to be able to close it! is this gonna be a problem?!
thanks for the help
cheers

I'm not sure, but I think it could be the hangle mech has got 'out of sync' with the roof. Take the handle & trim surround off (it unclips at the back, and slides out towards the rear) and have a look at the mech, I think theres a lock pin or gear there which you can push/remove to allow the handle to cartry on turning. Then just reset the lock once the roof is shut.
See this article:
http://www.btinternet.com/~john.wintle2/article/Sunroof/Sunroof.htm
It mentions the gearing block mech and how to fit it correctly. I'm sure it will become obvious once you are looking at it!

i did a post on removing the sunroof with pics that may also help. its in the maintenace child forum at the top of this forums page.

fixed the sunroof today
the gearing mech had become out of sync with the winder handle, so the handle stopped cos it thought the roof was shut when it actually wasnt.
just remove the handle and trim, then remove the mech and realign the tooth cog in the mech. was nice and easy and took 10 mins.
cheers for the replies

BUMP
Same problem, but I've taken off the winder and re-aligned on the cog but the problem still persists. I close it to just over the half way point and it goes super stiff. It is at the point were the sunroof raises up at the back but does not come forward as well so when you try to wind it more you can't.
Any more suggestions? I can't get it out as it won't fully close and the British weather might harass my car!
Thanks,
James

Its a long time since I had one to bits, but 2 things seem to lead to jamming, the 1st is the front of the sliding roof jamming on the wind deflector, because the pivot points on the retracting struts have corroded, this is easy to spot.
However not so easy to spot is the problem I think you have! removing the sliding roof panel is a matter of a few screws etc, and carefully lifting away from the car, this will reveal the the 2 brackets (O/S and N/S) that give the S/R its drive, these brackets are attached to the winding cable. Expose the cables by removing the cable covers that run either side of the S/R aperture, and you'll find that one side or the other, the bracket has become detached from the cable... if this is the case, you will need to source a new cable.
