Hi,
As some of you may know my 8valve gti motor has died. I am considering getting a 2litre 16valve ABF engine from a mk3 gti.
I know that the mk3 engine mounting is the same (I think). However I do not know what exactly I will need apart from the obvious, ie, loom, ecu.
Will I need a mk3 exhaust?
Please help.

what year is it? if its a late spec the engine loom will plug straight in. You'll need a complete MK2 16v zaust system ideally, or at least the downpipe which will connect to the 8v system.
you might have clearance probs at the bulkhead, either a taller front engine mount or some percussive surgery to the tunnel will sort this out ;)

I dont think you have bulkhead clearance problems at all rubjonny. Mine didnt anyway.
If you wanna use the mk3 gearbox also you will need the cable change shifter box and a little gizmo to convert the cluth from hydraulic to manual (its just like a rocking arm really). You can get them but im not sure where from.

i'm intrested in this conversion any ideas on costs to get it done as my engine skills are non existant

Oh and all the mounts are the same. The engine will just drop straight in. Not sure on cost really. The engines probably sell for around £650. Have a look on ebay.
