Title: MK5 R36
Post by: AlexRWD on 19 April 2006, 14:03
Anyone seen the piece in Auto Express?  Feature is mainly about the MK6 Golf due in '08, but has a pic of a mean looking black 5 dr R32, with wheels that look as though they were nicked off a Focus ST.

Article says it will have 3.6 V6 with between 280-300bhp!

The Auto Express article:

VW's current car set to go out with a bang

While VW is working on a successor for the MkV Golf, its engineers haven't finished with the current machine.

Test drivers are evaluating a final flagship for the hatchback range, badged the R36. Powered by the 3.6-litre V6 that debuted in the Passat, the car will offer between 280 and 300bhp. Due on sale early next year, it will hit the road 12 months ahead of the March 2008 debut of the new-look Golf. Prices are still being kept under wraps, although it's expected the newcomer will cost at least £1,500 more than the current R32, weighing in at £26,000.

The model is based on the four-wheel-drive R32, but the increased performance means changes will be made to the suspension and brakes. Extra cooling will also be required to feed cold air to the bigger engine. New 19-inch alloys, inspired by the Lamborghini Gallardo's rims, will be available, too.

Thanks to the revised suspension settings and larger wheels, the car will be more driver-focused and less refined than the R32, which was praised for its ability to cover ground quickly, but criticised for its lack of character. With an additional 50bhp, the new car is expected to be able to sprint from 0-60mph in only 6.0 seconds, while the maximum speed will be limited to 155mph. However, in-gear performance is likely to give the R36 its greatest appeal, although the engineers' biggest challenge will be retaining the light, direct steering and supple ride of the brilliant Golf GTI.

Mk1 and Mk2 SHEDS!!!  I take it Doc that you have never driven a Mk1 or Mk2 in mint condition so it drives as it was meant to when built... believe me, the Mk2 16v for example is a fantastic car and in my opinion, just shades the Mk5 which although a fantastic car that seems to almost glide over road surfaces is still too heavy - even though it doesn't seem it - and doesn't have that direct 'one-with-the-road' go-kart feeling that the Mk1 and Mk2 had.  I still turn my head as far as it will go when I see a good Mk2 16v on the road and I'm driving a Mk5!

Oh and I got through all those cars in one year because I wanted to get a good feel of what a good Mk1 and Mk2 drives like as I don't have the advantage of years of driving these cars.  Still looking for that mint Mk2 16v - and I will find it   The Syncro is too heavy with its 4-wheel drive and so I have to sell - plus I need the money and the mint Mk2 8v I have just isn't a 16v and I could again do with the money so am selling that.  But after that, I will settle down and just take the Mk1 and 2 to shows and maintain them... all this searching, buying and selling/replacing is getting really tiring.

I have had most of the cars on your list when they were BRAND NEW my man. My First car was a "A" Reg 1.8 Mk 2 GTI. I had an engine conversion GTi engineering on it, then went onto Gti 16v's - I had a number of these and had some of them built by ottinger, then Sierrra 3 Door Cosworths, an Rs 500, BMW M5's, LOTS of Mercs , CL500's  etc! My last car before my GTi was a Land rover (would you belive it it was 6 months old! )  But I'm back with my Golfs again (thanks to my missus Mk5 GT TDi) and loving it! So please forgive the "shed" tag but I presumed that they were sh!t as you kept changing them.

Enjoy your Mk5

What are you going to buy next month?

I get bored quickly too - one other reason to chnage my cars but I have now settled on what I want... as for owning the earlier Golfs from new when they came out, you are beginning to make me feel  as a parrot. Lucky git

Have been in touch with the VW dealers out here in Dubai, they have not heard of the R36 yet! Anyone got any links to an official VW site that I can use.

I wanna put a deposit down!

Can only imagine how quick it is going to be! I thought the R32 was quick, this thing is gonna be fierce.

Are you serious Matt?  Good as it may be, it's never gonna give you the same thrills as a well sorted ragtop like your Boxter, and after the gorgeous weather we had on Thur, surely you don't need two sensible 5 seat hatchbacks?

Just tell your other half to start saving to trade up her GTI

Alex, after the late night drive I had last night after cleaning the Box I'll never move it on     Once you've clean any Porsche you can't just park them without driving and getting all the water off the brakes, what a shame

Be an ideal replacement for the misses, although I fancy taking the GTI and giving it to AMD  :smug:
