O.k, I've got next week off work so I'm doing a engine, gearbox oil, oil and fuel filter and coolant change on the old girl (I'll get round to brake and P.A.S fluid) does anyone have any hints or tips about the best products to use and things to look out for as I go. Any advice appreciated, thanks

Oil = synta silver from VAG
Oil filter = OEM VAG with non return valve
Gearbox Oil = ATF fluid.
Coolant = nothing special, just something that is both antifreeze and anti-corrosive
-
Isn't ATF for auto boxes?
-
Glad you posted that mate, thats what I thought but I didnt want to look like a dick if I was wrong ?
-
I use castrol syntrax in gearbox, always seems to work a treat, you can buy it at halfords.
Apart from that i would agree with all of the above, just make sure you mix 40% antifreeze 60% water.
-
ATF 80/90W - no problems in any of the gearboxes i have put it in. Was reccommended by a mate of mine who used to race golfs.
-
If you say so, but its not what vw recommend
-
Manual gearbox oil 75W-90 is recommended for a mk3, i would be surprised if the mk2 is different.

redline MTL works well in the 020 box, has been known to cure 2nd gear crunch. No such luck for me, but it made shifting so much better especially when cold!
-
Never tried that, how much is it?
-
Is there a specific grade or is it just called redline mtl ?
-
Listen to "Slick#13" he knows what he is talking about... He has helped on a few problems i've had with my car and was always right... :nerd:
Good Luck
Knobby.

£12 a bottle from here:

need 2 bottles for a 020 box :)
-
Go with the above or castrol syntrax, great for smooth gear changes
-
Thanks for that rubjonny, looks like good stuff and I'll probably take your word for it !
-
yeah it is quite stiff, but worth a try before you bin your gearbox ;)
-
Whats quite stiff mate ? (no pun intended)
-
alcoholic ones.........
(resisted a smutty comment........)
-
as long as you get sticky fingers
-
Stiff?! Dunno where that came from, I meant 'quite steep' as in the price for a bottle MTL
But then its alot cheaper than it was now we have some proper UK distributors!
-
Thats a relief, I thought the thread was going into a whole new weird area for a minute
-
think its a bit late now eh
-
Its never too late, I'm dealing with weirdos and the like all day in work I don't need it when I get home and come on here. I need intelligent conversation
