? ;)

Blimey, thats a tough one. I'm looking at options for my Mk1 (distant) project. I would have liked the 2.8VR6, quality engine but probably too heavy. 1.8 G60 is another option but I suspect are rare as rocking horse sh1t. 1.8T is a viable option, especially in a year or two whereupon I think there will be a few more available for a reasonable price.
I'll be interested to see how people vote here and what they feel makes a good engine, as its not always just about the performance...........................
-
The 2.8L lump is quality, powerfull and bullet proof ;)
-
According to top gear, when they looked at that Corrado, it was the best (or was it one of the best) engines VW have ever produced. From my point of view though, sticking it in a Mk1........ :-\ :-\ bit too heavy I think is the general consensus of opinion.

corrado one is 2.9 isnt it?
-
Yeah I think it is.........but is it not basically the same engine? If so, what did they do to increase the cc? Bore or stroke?
-
Forced induction! I am a big fan of the G60 engine. However the 1.8 turbo lump is an excellent engine as well. What about the 5v Audi engine. One from a TT. 225hp sounds good to me especially through a 6 speed G/box.
-
Golf engine is 2792cc , corrado engine is 2861cc. Corrado engine is bored out by 1mm with same stroke as golf.
-
Thought that may be the case, cheers '6.

Hmmmm, idea's, idea's......... :)

I still might go for forced induction on the vr6. Question is , is 10-1 to high on compression ratio?
-
thx for clearing up that 2.8 -> 2.9 mess always wondered why they bothered having em different
not sure about quality in comparison, or suitability for transplants... but ya missed the 2.0 16v off :P

10:1 is probably a little high. I wouldn't think You would want much over 8.5:1 for forced. I know a fella out this way with a MK4 VR6 and twin turbos. Makes about 380hp. Next time I see him I will ask him what his compression is and what type of pistons he is running. I would assume forged pistons would be required. :)
-
I think the vr6 already has forged pistons from the factory, loads of companies do supercharger kits that just 'bolt on' without any engine work. Just curious really.
-
could have, not to sure really. wouldn't suprise me running that kind of compression stock. Would be a load of fun to strap a paxton or vortech charger on it though. :)
-
Compression isn't as high as 16v engines. KR - 10.5-1 , 9A - 10.75-1.
-
Dam I didn't realize they are that high on compression. No wonder they like good petrol. lol.
-
2.0 16 valve is a staight drop in a mk1 ;).
VR6 engine will take 6 to 8 psi of boost on standard compression ratio with the right chip. Would make it a torque monster, ripping cats eyes out of the road when you overtake :o.

Cheers Steve, whats the best to get? turbo or supercharger?
-
Both would work well, the charger is a popular choice. Seems to suit the engine well. Turbo would require a intercooler due to the higher inlet charge temps, s/c should be ok. Follow these links, this site has a lot of good info (and the usual junk ;)).

'6 u thinking of changing ur engine?
As u know i'm a complete novice, the talk of ratios just sails over my head ???!All i want to know is what would work best in a mk1 cabby n What would give me the best bhp?
(please keep it simple-bit like me sel :))

*starts a little dance*
20vT, 20vT, here I come, here I come ;D
*repeats*
-
You all got bottomless wallets then I take it?
-
Gotta join in on Dizzies 20V dance. Grab the engine and tranny from a bent TT and have fun. come on it's only money. they give you more every payday. :)
-
Ok then 1.8T TT 225 bored out to 2 litres with front wheel drive seat cupra R six speedbox with limited slip diff.

Gotta join in on Dizzies 20V dance. Grab the engine and tranny from a bent TT and have fun. come on it's only money. they give you more every payday. :)
I think we all must be on the look out for one of them at the right price 8)

VR6 looks too heavy :-\
1.8T... :D
-
to save a few phone calls...
dubsport - ?4500+vat
stealth - ?5500
Midland VW - ?3500
TSR - ?6000
rough figures though
drive in drive out prices. the TSR one has 230bhp and the rest have 200bhp. in a '87 mk2 golf. aparently the fuelling system is better on the k-jet engines than the digi. but the loom needs more work.
-
intresting prices
looks like i'll be doing the 20v dance soon (but not at he garages you listed)

I would love to be myself. I love that engine when it's in the TT's loads of fun. I can only imagine it in a MKII. Can't wait for the summer. I want a G60 to play with. not a 20v but still endless fun and a good thing to throw money at.
