I need your help to decide which golf to get. It’s between a 1.4 or a GTI 16V. my main concerns with the GTI is the running costs. Insurance is not a problem it’s just the fuel and repairs that I am not sure about. I drive slowly most of the time lol but what are GTI’s like on petrol, I spend about £20 a week now on my 1.1 polo lol

you'll get about 20-25 mpg urban and about 35-40 mpg motorway in a gti (8 or 16 v)
-
if you drive normally round town you'll be hitting around 30 too in a 16v,

not in sheffield city centre you wouldn't  you can't go more than 50 yards without having to stop at some temporary traffic lights . my average speed over a 2 mile journey to work is normally 8 - 10 mph

I can't get any sort of mpg in sheff cuss of all the road enforcment crap all-over, twocker bumps n all that, drives me mad everytime i go...

the bumps and huge potholes are the reason i'm sticking to 15's with 50 profile tyres

what the mpg on a vr6
thanks
-
about 28mpg !!!
If you're paying £20 now on a 1.1 expect to pay about twice as much for a 2.8 Vr6 lump !
Realisticly, if insurance is not a problem repairs are about the same what ever VW you get.
Fuel costs are what can hit the pocket Bigtime!
Your 1.1 will do about 50mpg. So will my 1.9 TDI. GTI's about 35ish. As i'm sure will will have found out, I'd rather get 50mpg and pay enough now than a ridiculus 28mpg with the cost of fuel now !

Aint Sheffield a feckin nightmare  Im lucky if i get 200 miles from a full tank with all the speed bumps, potholes and feckin roadworks  What winds me up big time is that they put new speedbumps in and leave the rest of the road full of holes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whats that all about???

Cheers guys
The problem I have is I need a faster car now. Been driving 1.1Â’s for 5 years ( I need to move on) but as a result I have 5 years N.C.B which is why my insurance is so cheap on a VR6 (I am only 23 lol) been putting off getting a fast car for to long because of fuel prices, I just have to decide between the GTI or VR6 now, going to test drive a VR6 tomarrow :)

Just get the damn VR6, forget about the fuel consumption cos once you drive and hear it, it wont matter

I'd love to have a VR6 !!
Got a spare petrol tanker following you ???!
28 mpg is realistic for a 2.8 though !
