I've had the new Gti since december, but due to a harsh winter here in germany its sat in the garage unused.....until now!!
My mother came to visit over easter, and travelled home via the hook - harwich ferry route. So i decided that her lift back to the port yesterday was an ideal time to finally get the golf on the road. im selling it in a few months and it needs a min 4500 miles on it, so a serious run out was overdue!!
Anyhooo, the figures recorded my gps (and the golfs trip computer), were interesting!
Round trip from Bielefeld - Hook of Holland - 466 miles
Average speed to the port - 76mph (wet)
Average speed home - 91mph
Fuel average - 27mpg (not too bad)
Being easter sunday i was confronted by something i had never imagined possible.... The A2 autobahn is notoriously busy, and is in fact continental europes busiest road, however there were certain sections of the road where as far as the eye could see up ahead was empty - unbelievable!! Therefore there were several 140mph+ moments and a 144 max.
Truely epic!! After picking my mum up from the port last week in my works peugeot i felt stiff and tired - when i got home yesterday i was buzzing!!!
Just one complaint really - the stereo is sh!t

I hear 144mph is the best way to run in a new engine
-
 lol - dont worry - it had 460 miles on it from the wife going back and forth to work over the winter - it needed a day out. The day was certainly an interesting appraisal of what the gti's all about - and if im honest i was suprised. 6 straight hours behind the wheel and i was still smiling!! Its just that stereo....jeez!!!
-
wish we had roads here that i could attempt that at ;)
and yes the stereo is pretty poo, sorry i didnt get teh MFD2, its a lot better so they say :)
-
In which areas do you feel the stereo is poo(r)?
-
well, the rds unit that i have sounds poor. Its quite tinny and has a poor bass response. out of the 6 cars ive had in the last couple of years this is a bad-un - only beaten in crapness by the stereo in my other current stead, an '06 pug 407 (which is dreadful!). It also seems that VW punish you for wanting a pureist steering wheel - as the volume controll on the head unit is on the passenger side - how dumb is that (well, it's almost as dumb as the audi a4's handbrake/armrest conflict).
It just seems that whether its green day or godskitchen - it just lacks punch!

So is it worth getting the stereo upgraded???
Hows sunny Bielefeld btw Ant, lived in Munster for 4 years myself, got to love those autobahns!!!
-
Thats the problem... As youre will probably have guessed (me being in Bielefeld) i have brought the Gti in its UK guise tax-free. So, from my point of view it wouldnt be worth paying the extra for the RCD (or the satnav) as its not something im going to be able to get my money back on. However - if i was going to keep the car i would be straight down to my nearest iceman for an upgrade!!
Bielefeld is sunny for the first time today!! had snow on the ground for the best part of 4 months from early december!!

Nice drive fella
We've ordered the RCD 500 upgrade with soundpack, so I'll let you know if that improves things!
-
Nope they still sound crap

i think more annoying than the sound is the fact that the volume control is on the passenger side of the car!! Im not really a fan of MF steering wheels, but may have to get one (if i get the golf again this year) to stop my moaning!
