Title: HELP WITH UPRATING WIRING LOOM
Post by: cwc2128 on 17 April 2006, 09:41
Hi guys a little help with wiring loom please.
Tried to up-rate the loom on my 1988 16v GTI

Followed the instructions from

http://www.matey-matey.com/uprated_headlight_wiring.shtml

So i cut the black/yellow wire on the driver side / air box side and taped it back into loom, then cut the black/yellow wire battery side.

Connected 2 x wires from (87) on the relay connected to bulb side of the wires then connected the loom side black/yellow wire battery side to (86) on relay

(85) to earth and (30) to the battery..

HMMMMMMMMMMM no lights checked every thing nope.

My concern is that when using a multi meter and checked both black and yellow wires on original loom battery side I'm getting 12 volts but the black yellow on the drivers side has no volts ,so previous owner has run a jump lead across behind rad to power drivers light.

What am i doing wrong

Is it right that the black/yellow wire from the loom battery side that i connect to (86) on the relay is already carrying 12v..

I've doen this myself and it worked first time, so I know the diagram is correct. Did you check the voltages before you started cutting? It sounds like there could have been a problem before you tried fitting your new loom.

The matey matey instructions hav been written using a 1990 spec car, the wiring on your '88 may be different colours

I'd suggest putting it back to original, check your voltages so you know which wires you need to cut and go from there, as it sounds like you have connected everything up OK - just check your colours!

First thing I'd do is replace the light switch, these are a weak spot on MK2s.
Run a wire to the relays from the battery direct to make sure they actually switch on as well :)

I reassembled it making sure all connections were OK as there were not crimped just taped and I'm getting 11.5volts to each light.
