replace the plastic flanges on the front & right side of the block, and take a close look at the radiator.  Helps if you take off the grill & rad fan shroud.

had a look today still no leaks

i got a feeling my fan dont work as i have never heard it kick in yet
i might change the fan and radiator on the weekend

still driving ok so far think it needs a service though

backbox sounds crap sounds rough so i will put my sytem on from the white one
and the gear stick is rather floppy so ill change that with my old one aswell

see if it improves ill check water tonight see if it goes down

oh and if i rev it tappin the pedal it pops what stops that

No point in starting a new thread, when this is pretty much related...

I ended up taking out my radiator in the long running saga of decontaminating my coolant system. Now it is all clean inside, and I reinstalled it, the entire radiator gets hot now, I let the oil temp on the MFA get to 90oC but the fan doesnt kick in  I have bridged the connector to see if the fan works still and it does. What sort of temperature is it meant to get to before the fan kicks in?
Also, if i have to get a new thermostat for the radiator, or a new radiator where is the best place?

it should kick in about 3/4 on the temp gauge :)

I had both thermostat and rad from gfs.  (gsfcarparts.com) (rad 16v gti part no is 17333 or 8v is 17332) Good quality stuff at a good price

check out AVS too:

Just as good if not better than GSF, shame they don't have as many parts in stock!

Well, got up to 3/4 water temp, and kapow! the fan kicked into life!!

although, i think i may have found out why i keep losing a bit of water, there is a screw where the hose back to the expansion tank should be...so it looks like a new radiator for me anyways...

so you dont have the small hose at all?  Interesting!  If so you might want to consider fitting a MK3 2e flange at the front of the block, there is a connection here for the header tank hose.  You also have to swap the 2e waterpump/oil cooler hoses on as well, but prob all cheaper than a new radiator!

The small hose at the top of the header tank is there, it just looks like someones put a plug or bung into the end of it, when I looked at it before i just thought 'whats the point in that hose', now I know...

ah cool, get the 2e flange then (assuming you have an 8v??):

Also has clips for the sparky wires.  Tidys the engine bay up nicely :)

my fan deffo does not work
not drinkin alot of water unless i go rather fast

my oil is still ok temperature stays in middle where it should be
oil temp is 92

goin to change radiator and fan on weekend as i have spare ones
or maybe just thermostat see if that does out

all fine and dandy now

changed thermostat and the fan today kicked in once it got warm

i think i found the water problem as its been drinkin alot since i bought it
the water flange on the front of the head and on the side has a tiny leak
i noticed when i was puttin water back in so i will change gaskets tomorrow

but i still dont no why my heaters wont warm up
any other things i can check to make them work?

common places for leaks those, just get 2 new ones from VW, the plastic ones can warp with age.  As for heaters, have you taken the bypass valves out yet?
Title: Re: temperature
Post by: VR6_ROB on 29 April 2006, 17:38
where are the bypass valves
Title: Re: temperature
Post by: rubjonny on 29 April 2006, 18:21
follow the feed & return pipes to the matrix, they're next to each other and pass through the back of the engine bay.  If there is a pair of valves chopped into them with a smaller pipe between the 2, you have the bypass valves fitted.  Either remove and patch the ends together with some copper pipeing, or buy 2 new uncut hoses for £10 each from GSF.
