Title: I'm losing sleep ...
Post by: OlliBlue on 13 April 2006, 23:29
Hi,

newbie to this forum and gti's

just sold my 2003 A4 2.5 TDI S-Line 18"
and I'm ordering a Mk5 GTI in Belgium (where i live) next week
DSG, Black, 3d, xenon, ...

But I'm having a hard time choosing the extras :

17 or 18 wheels, had RS6 18s on the Audi, very uncomfortable, or was that the suspension?
Leather or cloth ?
Is the soundsystem any good, or should i get an aftermarket to top the BOSE i had in Audi?
If i get the leather I'll have to drop the sat nav for a rcd500...

Loosing sleep on all this already, and will prob have to wait till September to pick it up

any suggestions and advice much appreciated

What makes it worse is that I went to inspect it so saw it in all its glory..     well sort of, it was raining and it looked a bit dirty and manky and the driver side floor cover looked quite dirty .  But it was not damaged or scratched which is what is was slightly worried about.

The sound system (RCD500) is excellent.  I have added an iPod connector and that completes the setup perfectly.  As I go on to describe below, because the Gti ain't super quiet, it is fit for purpose.

The Gti can suffer from tyre noise on some surfaces, hardly suprising with 225's (what wouldn't?)  Fine on smooth tarmac, but on B roads it can be quite intrusive.  I would imagine 18" could make it worse.  For where I live 18" ers are not a good choice on any vehicle, too jittery.

On other noise sources; there is no wind noise, and only nice engine noises.

Cloth or leather.  I like cloth as its more comfortable and doesn't suffer from cold in winter/hot in summer.  Just depends on how much of the 'impress the mother-in-law' factor you want.

Definitely go for xenon if you do much night driving.

I'm getting Xenon on my next one   I wasn't going to order the GTI this soon but my wife talked me into on the test drive - she didn't have to try too hard   So because it was a rushed order, I skimped on many options like Xenon, that I would have got.  However, I was set on leather but now am wondering whether I should order it next time because the cloth seats look really nice.  DSG however was never on my list of options to have - not enough driver involvement in my opinion.

Oh and I opted for the 18" - I was undecided until I saw them on the demonstrator that I test drove and they look magnificent on the car... there is a bit of road noise but then I drive a Mk1 and Mk2 at the moment so its much better than that!

Hi

ok, I'll get the sat nav with soundpack (which are 2 different options in BE)
I was in doubt because another topic on this forum described it as rubbish
what about that iPod connector, can I fit that once I have the car, doesn't seem to be on the list of extras

my other car (bmw 318ci conv) also has xenon, so that one is a must-have!
the 18" , pretty nice roads where I live, and they look amazing !

a full option will set me back 38000 euros, 26200£, dealer is likely to give me a least 7%
still thinking about dropping the leather ...

Off-Topic: how common are MK5 Gti's  in the UK? I've only seen 2 in Belgium

Living near Glasgow and commuting in, I see 2 regulars parked near my uni. But other than that, maybe 1 a month if im lucky. And I would notice them. Plenty Mk4 gti and R32's though (one mk5 r32).

Live on the South Coast, and when we ordered ours, I didn't see that many around.

Since we collected ours 2 weeks ago, I'm starting to see quite a lot around - but they're mostly dark colours, which I feel makes the car a lot harder to distinguish from all other Mk V's.

We went for red with 18's, which makes it pretty clear you're in a GTI

Visited dealer today, this is what I think it 'll be :

3d Black pearl DSG
Sat Nav
VW Sound
18"
Leather
Sunroof
DSG wheel
xenon

dealer told me not to get VW carkit, instead they will install parrot bluetooth kit
he also proposed to get a Candy White 3d, he wants to get one himself.
they don't sell much GTI's here in Belgium, and he said the Candy White is THE color to get.
wife hates it !
but... we are going to Brussels Friday or next week to check out different colours and 3d vs 5d.
I have no kids (yet) and we are planning to get a BMW 5 series next year, so 3d GTI looks better IMHO.

also no electric folding mirrors, and no parking aid
no winter pack, heated seats are std

anyone got the tinted windows ?
wasn't gonna get them but dealer says they look great...
