Title: Written My Dub Off :( Engine Fire...
Post by: Fielder on 13 April 2006, 12:49
Well folks, Picked up my golf last night complete with its new engine. Drove it home this morning around a roundabout, not even had a chance to put my foot down, when BANG, white smoke everywhere.....I stop in the road, run to the front of the car and pop open the bonnet, Engine fire.  999 is called, It seems like they take forever, But they get there in time to stop most of the damage, But not before the flames have taken my bonnet, Drivers wing, Grill, Headlamps and everything inside the bay. 24 hours away from the show and track day, and my cars on fire.

I phone up the two guys who did the work, There just as gutted as me, Im told by police that in most cases like this the whole cars just explode killing people inside. When Ant and kev find out about how close it could of been they cant even discribe how bad they feel about it. The fire crew gave me a brief accident report at the side of the road, Seems fuel leaked from the carb onto the hot exhaust causing the fire. My girlfriend gets driven down by her mum, Shes just happy im alive and ok.

Ive got a show and track day in 29 hours and a melted car. Im f**ked? Ant and kev called every connection they have to try and sort somthing out so me and my girlfriend dont miss out on our extended weekend at the show. In one hour i might be the new owner of an 8V GTI. If thats the case i will have 27 hours to strip all the un-damaged parts from my car, Both body, interiour and suspention and put them on the new black GTI.....Will i make it?

Well folks, Every cloud has a silver lining.  Im now the latest "proper" member of the golfgti clan! Yes folks, Last night i picked up this baby:

Got it from Moff, a skyline owner who reads and somtiems posts on this very forum. Found it in the cars for sale section and picked it up for £150. Moff was very helpful and i braught down my macanic (whos paying for it as he blew my car up in the first place!) Its got a real strong motor despite the high millage, However after blowing off a few cobwebs the motors in great condition. We will need to first source a new sump as the old one appears to of been welded and the car overheated for a while, However we thing it could be somthing todo with the car being sat on a drive for 6months. The heating problems seemed to dissapear after a while.

The cars a Kjet (later spec injection...if i got hte name wrong slap me!) and a black 4 door identical to mine. I had the option of getting a euro styled Orange mk2 for a little bit more, However the orange car probally had the tits already ragged off it and i prefer 4doors. Im also not ready to part with my original project. So once we have moved everything (doors, skirts, bumpers. Windscreen, tail gate, Buckets etc etc etc) you wont be able to tell the difference.

the car also has a MFA, which proved a very fun gadged on the drive home. I also learnt the stigma that goes with the GTI badge on the back, As everybody seemed to want to race me! I resisted the temptation on the drive home as im not used to standard suspention and i dont want to blow up my new car! i did however have one run against a ford cortina....The look on the drivers face as my GTI flew past was perfect! I also had a GTI driver overtake me and give me a thumbs up!

The cars now sat in my friends workshop and im waiting for them to pick up whats left of my old golf so they can move the parts accross. Unfortunatly my original bonnet was damaged in the fire as the GTI could do with a new bonnet.

Although i said i wanted to build the GTI to resemble my old car. I will be making a few changes, Ive spend the weekend at donny and found my self surrounded by race cars more then fiberglass as i spent most of my time down the race paddocks and its been an eye opener to me. Hopfully this new car will be less boy racer more track day car when we are done.

One word for the 8V GTI - FAST!...VERY FAST....So fast i dont know why i waisted my time with a 1.6 all these years!

glad you've found a new motor Fielder, think ya need educating on the old Door count, still got 2 too many if ya ask me, am hoping it's ok for £150, especially wiv the luck you have with Dubs, try to make it last longer than a week before ya break it......

 :nerd:
Title: Re: Written My Dub Off :( Engine Fire...
Post by: Fielder on 18 April 2006, 09:55
lol i prefer 4doors, and ive had over £500 worth of work done to my doors and wanted to carry them accross  I think 4doors have more of an estate look to em instead of a hot hatch...i might just be strainge tho

and on that count, im on my 3rd mk2golf in 2 weeks

Ive gotta admit tho, Even the drive home was enaugh to realise how carful i have to be with the car, In my 1.6 i could easily drop the accelerator and worrie about traffic and corners etc later one, But with the GTI you have to work out if you have space to go fast or you can find your self in quite a sticky situation...however this might be becasue the car was on standard suspention and im not quite used to the speed yet....

Ohh and ive got powerstearing as well as a MFA....go me

Thanks folks

Tow truck arives tomorrow to move the old one to the workshop were the GTI has been resting after a days rest from its ragging it recieved last night. Ive got a few problems that need sorting on the GTI, if anybody can point me in the right direction on how to fix them:

Hand break light stays on - nothing todo with the cable, Just seems the senser is a little stuck

Over heating - Seemed to solve its self, but any suggestions just to be sure?

No air in the cab - Hot air comes out, But theres no fan, was told it could be a fuse or a jammed fan?

Front grill - a friend of mine has a jetta headlamp setup he wants rid of, I have a 4 lamp setup hes prepaired to swap for it provided it can be converted to a 2lamp setup, is it simply a case of removing the inner lamps and slapping a de-badged 2light grill over the front?

Thanks for the support folks, I cant wait for it to be back, None of my boy racer mates know about it, they still think ive got the 90BHP 1.8 engine in it. Boy will they be suprised when i open my engine bay

Tow truck arives tonight to move my old dub to the workshop so we can begin the strip down. All the items i can remove my self and work on myself i have placed in two big cardboard boxes and i will be keeping them here in the house. While the bulk of the work is being carried out ill be popping up with my boxes to add the interiour (and remove most of it too) and a few exteriour excessories like lights, mirrors etc.

Anybody have a bonnet and drivers wing nocking about?

insurance is still being sorted. As with getting the car finished so we can MOT and Tax it.

Question tho. You know the big red Race Tow Hooks you see on DTM cars etc? Where do you get them from and how do you fit them? Do they have to be welded to the frame somehow?

Going to go work on the car myself tonight. Will be fitting the arches and side skirts myself (as ive had to do it enaugh time to do it with my eyes shut) then ill be sorting out the interiour and the headlights (still not decided to go for a 4 light, 2 light or Jetta setup) and get cracking. Tonights list is:

Fit and bolt on side skirst
Bond on Wheel arches
Replace bulbs for zennon bulbs
Remove front and rear VW badges and spray Black for the time being
Adjust ride height on coilovers accordingly
Inspect existing exhaust system, Work out what to do with old one
Strip rear interiour compleatly
Fit bucket seats and harnesses
cut down gear leaver and fit gater

Then we get the exciting job of having it MOTed tomorrow and if it goes through ill be driving it later that day
