Title: polo's and changing a gearbox
Post by: Sugar79 on 12 April 2006, 13:46
My mum really wants a polo, but unfortunatly doesnt have much money at all to buy one as she wants one from a M-p-reg.. problems is she can only drive an automatic and finding a decent polo with an auto box is hard to come buy, there was a nice one on ebay buts its out her price range..

The question is how hard is it to buy a manual polo (as they are cheaper) and put an auto box init?? i suppose its gonna be more expensive to fit than to find a 2nd hand auto box... anyone know there stuff about swapping gearboxes that could give me some advice??

My aunty managed to find a V reg Auto Polo, which was a good price.

I'd say persevere looking for an auto polo.

The gearbox change would involve: gearbox, gear selector, pedal box (cant use manual pedals with an auto) new flywheel (i think) possibly an ecu from an auto polo?

Its a lot of work, although she could just take the manual test and save a bundle

cheers for the info, i did have a feeling it prob be more work than i thought..

lol no she has been driving autos for to long now, the whole reason she took her test in an auto was because she couldnt get the hang of the clutch and gears after many many lessions hahahahaha.

if you're having trouble locating an auto polo, its got to be pretty hard to locate an auto gearbox for one?! plus the cost would be a nightmare! try one of those places that finds cars for you..........

Auto gearboxes are generally pretty enormous, and also cost a bomb. There really is no point in getting a manual and changing it all over. As has been mentioned get her to do her manual test, as that will be by far the cheapest option for her.

I have an N reg Polo, which needs a new gearbox, and I can tell you that the cost of a new gearbox is about £1000 from VW or £600 for a recon box from someone like VWSpares. Breakers prices are about £150-250.
Then you have fitting costs. Though the local Mr Clutch centre quoted me £700ish for g/b, clutch and fitting.

Though when the car only cost us £1000 you have wonder if it's worth it.

That said, it's a good fun car, better than the F*rd or V*uxhall equivalents.

*btw, those prices were for a manual gearbox, but autoboxes will be similar.
