Title: How Do I Check If The MAF sensor is faulty??

HI i own a 2000 x reg golf 2.0 AQY engine code and i was told that my MAF sensor could be faulty due to my car running rough like its  firing on 3 cylinders also missfiring.
Any way to check the MAF sensor without having vagcom, i have tried cleaning it but no luck.

Im not sure if there is without vagcom. Sounds like the most probable cause and £70 from dealers with surcharge aint too bad.
