Does anyone know if a door off of a early Mk2 is a different shape to a later one or is it just a difference in the rub strips. I'm thinking about putting a different door on my 91 5 door, is it just a case of swapping the trim over or is a door off an earlier model different (as in the big plastic trims on early cars and small rubber strips on later models), Thanks in advance dudes

as far as iknow they are the same. the strips just pull off and you can replace it with the ones which were on orig doors!
Only problem i'e had since changing the rear doors is that they dont line up 100%, but it's no problem if ya know what ya doin with them, just need to squeeze handle properly and pull firmly. Although they will be lined up better sooon! Let me know how ya get on!
p.s are the windows manual or electric? i'm guessin electric is a bit fiddley as mine are manual!, and don't forget centra locking!!!

Thanks for the reply mate, my car doesn't have leccy windows in the back (and it wont unless I have to start sitting there !) and it does have central locking, I'm in a bit of a dilemma the door is starting to go a bit rusty on the bottom edge in one place and its just come through at the bottom of the doorskin. I was thinking of getting a good door off of a similar age car and just swap them but the car is tornado red and a mate of mine who's a panel beater and sprayer by trade thinks the chances of getting a second hand red door that will be a good match are all but impossible and thinks the easiest cure is to cut/grind the rusty patch back and repair it ! I don't know what to do for the best ?

i had a spot of rust about 50p sized which seemed to be sprweading, but i changed the doors due to dents in them! big ones!

The only diff in rear doors is some later ones had a strengthening crash bar fitted (I'm 99% sure they did anyway, the front doors defo did), and the very early ones wont have any holes for rubbing strips :)
Edit: Oh and the really early ones were painted Mars red not Tornado red, which is worth considering. I would compare the door to your paint before you buy it, otherwise dont bother. Like the mechanic says, tornato red is one of the worst colours for fade!
