Iv'e often read threads stating that 0-60 time of a GTI 8v in excess of 9 seconds, even as slow as 10 seconds. Me and my son have timed my particular 8v Digifant with a stopwatch and GPS, the quickest we've had is 7.8, the slowest being 8.3, so averages around 8 seconds. Now I know a lot of you will poo-hoo this, especially 16v owners, and I also appreciate this isn't a very scientific way of accurately timing this. However, my sister has gone abroad and left me to look after her Mercedes CLK 230 Kompressor. We did some times in that (under wet conditions) and the best time we got was 9.1, the slowest 9.4. My 8v done at the same time came out at quickest 8.9, slowest 9.3, both times for both cars are slower because of wheelspin/traction in the wet. I then got my neighbour to come down to a strip of road and we nailed them side by side, and they were almost identical to 60. Now the point of this, is that the official 0-60 time for the Merc in most mags is a smidgen under/over 8 seconds, which would seem to prove as best as one can, that the Golf is about equal pace with the Merc to 60. And YES guys i know that would mean a 16v would be quicker. Finally, my car is a standard 1990 8v Digifant with 252,000 miles from an original engine and gearbox. Another point about 0-60's with my limited knowledge, is the weight differential between different models, for instance, my 8v is riding on 205/50 profile tyres, 2 door, everything is manually operated, and I run with no more than £10 worth of petrol. I guess that there are 16v's out there with 5 doors, electric windows, power steering, possibly electric seat etc etc, this would bring a light 8v much closer in performance to a fully specked up 16v, of course the opposite is also true, a fully specked up 8v compared to a lightweight 16v, the margin would be greater. And I can also personally vouch that I have never trashed, smoked, left for dead or anything else by a 16v.

remember peeps no 8v - 16v bashing.

book times for the 16v & 8v are very similar.
when the 8v was first launched it was given a time of 8.5 to get to 60. this was mainly because the car would only do 59.8mph in 2nd gear. therefore requiring an extra gear change to get to 60!
the 16v has a book time of 7.9 as it has a slightly longer 2nd gear which means it doesnt need the extra gear change
book times for both are with 1/2 tank of petrol & an extra passenger. so realistically you can knock 0.5 of each.
also. as said alot depends on the overall weight of the car. and more importantly the driver.
an equally specced 8v & 16v are very closely matced to 60. its from about 80 onwards the 16v will start to pull away from the 8v.
hope this clears up any 8v/16v arguments before they start!!!

I didn't mean for it to be a comparison between the 8v and 16v, just that I was recently reading a forum that the poor old 8v was as slow as 9-10 seconds for the dash to 60, and because I have my sisters car to compare it with, it realistically proves that the original figures for the 8v are about 8-8.5. Also, on the forum, some guys were stating that the 16v was up to 2 seconds quicker, which is frankly ridiculous. Yes I would agree about the weight issue, I think a lot of people overlook this.

8.3 seconds is the standard 0-60 time for a 8v.
I have got 60mph+ no problem in 2nd gear and it certainly feels quick, only problem is getting initial traction.
If I boot it in first I have to change up before 4000rpm or I just spin thru 1st and then 2nd.
I have a TSR engine in my 8v and I'm pretty sure I get a sub 8 second 0-60mph time. This of course depends on a huge amount of factors, amount of petrol, passengers, temp of tyres/engine/oil/gearbox etc, condition of road, any cops about etc
Its all about mid-acceleration for me, 0-60 times are pretty much bollox.

the only way you can guarantee your 0-60 is to get it properly timed. there is just so many other factors which people forget to consider

you are asking a lot there slick

Gradient! That makes a big difference and without theodolites you can't check it easily.

And wind direction, should do the run both ways... Was the Merc an auto? Does GPS give you terminal speed? Hope you were'nt using the speedos as a measure to 60mph, VW are notoriously optimistic.....

Optimistic?
I'm pretty sure my speedo shows at least 10 MPH more than I'm actually doing.
I've wrapped my speedo off the top and I'm sure I wasn't doing 130.
