I am in need of some help.
I am looking to upgrade my 1990 1.6 driver with a new engine.
Idealy i need an engine that will fit stright in 1.8 8v GTI. There are two types of this engine
Which type of engine is needed to fit
Will i need to replace the loom
Are the engine mounts the same as the driver.
If i replace the block and head on my current engine with that of a GTI will i have a GTI engine bar the injection, could leave injectors in and run it through a carb???
Any problems that i'm likely to come across
Gearbox wise is it a complete swap.
Has anyone done this before, i'd imagine so please could you PM me your details or if anyone knows of a "how to" "Walk through" on the net it would be greatly appricated.
Thanks

seriously sell the driver and buy a gti cos a)the insurance will be more than if it was a factory gti, and b there is no point building something u can buy cos it wont be a gti.
why do u need to upgrade the engine? is the old one shagged or do u just want more power?
-
I just want more power.
This seems the best way to achive it.
I understand your point about buying a GTI to start with but their are so many "shagged" examples out there and you pay over the odds for a good un. The driver is in amazing condition low milage low owners just abit on the slow side. I have been meaning to do something to it for ages, now got enough funds to do a conversion but need all the info i can get.
Any ideas?

and what makes you think that changing the engine is going to stop the one you put in being shagged?
Just look for a good example of a GTI

If you want to change an engine for the 'fun', go for it.
If you want to drive a GTI, go buy one. I was looking for a Driver, but ended up with a GTI because the Drivers were all so f**king expensive.

If you've got a mint Driver...buy a new engine.
That's what i'm going to do!

So does anyone actually know if a GTI lump will drop stright in, do i need to change engine mounts or loom?
