i got a 1600 driver.
i have put on:
-newly refurbed carb (2e2)
-new rotor arm
-new plugs
-new fuel filter
-new air filter
-drilled air box
-new 'o' ring in the inlt mani (wasn't blocked anyway)
-new dizzy cap
the car pulls very well, and drives great, but when it stands after a run, it stinks of petrol. dont smell it inside when driving though. it take ages to catch when warm starting -it just turns over and over. there are no obvious leaks, no pools of petrol underneath.
i got about 80 miles from 20 quid of juice. that aint right is it?
someone suggested the fuel accumulator, but i dont know.
what do you guys think?
-
Thats very poor MPG. I'd expect around twice that with mine (depending on what type of journey). Is the carb set up properly? You might be running rich?
-
had the co2 checked out it it was all fine.
-
Check for fuel leaks again matey sounds like your spilling more than your burning :)
also check all around the tank as a breather may have come of happened on a couple of mates cars not an easy job either :(
-
like i said mate, there is no drips on the floor, nor puddles when parked upafter a run.
what do you mean the breather may have come off?
could it be the fuel reservior/accumulator thingy? it smells of petrol at the fron rather than the back.
-
you need ecotek valve.
-
please explain all about ecotek valve.
-
Forget about the ecotec mate. 1st you need to get your overfueling sorted.
The ecotect is a daft little gizmo that claims to give better fuel economy. But if theres a problem then that needs fixing before you guy splashing cash on a ecotec valve.
-
if u find the answer let me know mate.. i got a 1300 with weber carb and an ecotek on it and im gettin a crappy 90 miles from 15 quid... and thats not raggin the ass off it either.
-
Do people still use those ecotek things? My god...
Take them off your cars for the love of god.
We had this problem with our Mk1 GTi, it may be that a breather pipe from the petrol tank is/has been disconnected or come loose.
You could try running some STP cleaner (Halfords) through your petrol tank...although I'm not sure that would make much difference.
Personally, I'd advise taking it to a VW specialist or a good garage that you know of.
-
just been for a good thrash around some bendy roads and then to fill up. the tank was completly dry so that dont appear to be leaking, and when i took the filler cap off, there was no sound of air rushing in, so that means the breather is ok dont it?
could a kackered fuel pump or fuelaccumulator cause crap mpg?
-
The fuel reservoir/accumulator acts as a pressure regulator and returns any xs fuel back to the tank. I think there is a spring loaded mechanism in it which can become seized. If it does you get the full unregulated pump pressure to the carb which can flood it and it makes the car stink! To check the accumulator, with the engine stopped disconnect the fuel tank return pipe from the top (its normally blue) and connect a short bit of fuel pipe to the free outlet and feed it into a clean bucket or bowl or something. Get someone to hold it steady for you or you'll be in a real mess. Start the engine (for a very short time) and you should get fuel pumping out of the accumulator into the bowl, this is th xs fuel the carb does not need. If you get nothing or just a very small dribble then the accumulator is b*gg*r*d.

thanks for the advice mate. i will check it asap.
-
would this account for over-running when turning off...?
-
No. Assuming you still have a Pierberg 2E2 carb, if the engine over-runs when you switch it off it probably means that the vacuum throttle shut off on the 3-4 point unit or the idle over-run control valve is not working. The over-run control valve I believe is electrically powered and controls the 3-4 point unit. It could be one or the other. There are other things that make it worse but I sha'nt bore you with them... just yet.....
