Title: broke down on M1 today
Post by: burna on 09 April 2006, 22:38
on my way back from alton towers today, the old 8v gti lump started playing up. the oil light has been flashing on and the buzzer going off too every so often, but the car runs fine and the buzzer goes off when the throttle is blipped so i werent to worried, but then the engine started to misfire really badly as i tried to accelerate, ended up limping along the hard shoulder on a tiny bit of throttle untill it finally cut out, it then wouldnt start at all.
id checked and replaced the airflow meter recently so that werent the problem and after 10 mins of head scratchin and tire kickn i tried to start it and it fired straight up, lumpy but runnin. after a mile or so it was spot on- better than ever, its pulling amazing with 5 people in ot still got 120mph (er......on private road honest.....)
this is the second time its done it and startin to annoy me.

advice please cheers

Mine does this intermittent stopping thing, only done it maybe 3 times in the past 4 months so not bothered to figure it out yet. It will suddenly start running like a complete dog with no power but off and back on and its fine.

I am thinking hall sender as all my coil/dizzy was sorted out not long ago.  Can't think of anything else that would be this intermittent. Fuel pump relay maybe?

tried the relay too but still being a b!tch, mine wont start back up for about 10 mins then its fine. its backfiring really well too, if you double blip the throttle theres a 2ft flame everytime which cant be good for the consumption either, (looks awesome in the dark if you blip during shifts tho)

Mine has the same issue every so often....always makes me panic when it happens but always seems to sort itself out fine.

Any ideas would be helpful on this as I think the MAJOR backfire she did for me the other day buggered the baffles in my rear box

Possible culprits:

a) Ignition leads
b) Hall sender in dizzy
c) Ignition amp
d) Air leak
e) Earthing strap fault
e) Mysterious electrical fault that will never be solved

My money's on b)
