Welcome to the forum.
Might be the hall sender in the dissy going they tend to do random things at random speeds. it has a plug conected with three wires on top of the dissy, try taking the plug off and cleaning the contacts this may fix it if not someone will know whats involved replacing it.

nice one will try that thanks lisa

try having a tinker with the distributer, sometimes they just get a bit gunked up and then throw the timing out. Also the idle screw might need adjusting. Whereabouts you based? as someone from here might be in the hear area and be able to have a look.

yeah id say dizzy aswell i had a problem wit mine popping and backfiring it was also losing power don't know if this is the same problem you are having but worth looking at the dizzy id say.
-
and check your vacuum hoses and timing of the engine
-
hi many thanks for all your advice will try these things and see what happens am based in salisbury wilts , once again thanks nice one for all your help lisa
-
cool let us know whats what
-
hi well have tried these things vaccum hoses am not too sure about how to check them , but i have bought a distributer and it is doing exactly the same , the guys at the garage have said it might be the ecu or a fuel problem so am none the wiser just 130 quid out of pocket as they will not take the distributer back so i am well and truly shafted any other ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks everyone lisa

Refering back to your first post, was there a misfire before you replaced the ignition module? I think you know where this is leading!
-
no there was no misfire before ignition module was changed ,do you think its that???? lisa
-
Was the ignition module second hand?
-
no from gsf ,and that was the second one as the rac reconded it was faulty !!!!
-
Well, its possible I suppose, did they send you a replacement before you returned the dodgy one? Do you know anyone local with a 16v who would let you swap modules over for a check? If they're too worried to do that perhaps they would put the GSF one on their's and see if it does the same. Also check all the earth straps from the battery to shell to engine etc. if these aren't making good contact or are missing the system tries to earth through the ignition module and burns it out (so I've read). In what way did the original ignition module fail? Do you still have it?..... Sooo many questions I know, it scares me to death having one of these when I read about all the things that go wrong, I drive it with my fingers crossed.
PS Just to be clear that we are talking about the same thing, the module that you replaced, where is it located?
-
the module i replaced is on the drivers side of the engine in top corner

Probably black & silver, a bit smaller than fag packet, 'bout £35? Well thats just a transitorised switch which sets off the spark but it is controlled by the larger box of tricks below it which is the main ECU. Whist the ignition module makes the spark by switching the current to the coil on and off (very quickly) the ECU actually controls 'when' it makes the spark and is controlled by RPM, vacuum and temperature......oh god this is getting heavy. :undecided: A small diameter transparent vacuum pipe is fed to the ECU, if this comes disconnected or splits somewhere it can mess the ignition timing up badly especially at higher revs. Also there is a temperature sender on the gearbox end of the cylinder head (there are four senders grouped together I dont know which one it is) which feeds to the ECU, if this is faulty it can also affect the ECU ignition timing. I'm still curious as to how the original ignition module failed, did it just 'stop' working?. If the new ignition module is def OK and it seems you've replaced just about everything else then the problem could be in the main ECU or the bits connected to it. You've spent loads of cash so far, some of it wasted & got nowhere, I could not suggest that you change the ECU, but you might check the vacuum pipe (its a long one) and you might try swapping the temperature sender, if you can figure which one it is! (Help! someone must know which one it is). You might just have to bite the bullet and take it to a main dealer or VW specialist to sort. What I can't figure is why you should be left with a problem if you replaced a part which was obviously faulty. Maybe the failure in the IM shorted something out in the main ECU........

the module that stopped working did just that, so changed it i came out of work and the engine would just turn over and not fire up , this is when i rang the rac and they eventually said that was the problem. so i changed it and it started straight away ,so this was the answer (in my eyes), but i noticed a slight miss on my next journey to birmingham which was the next day ,and from this point on my problems began . i have an ecu turning up tomorrow so fingers crossed . thanks for your info it does make sense not something i would have known .once thanks for taking the time to help will let you know lisa

I hope the ECU change works for you, it sounds like another expensive item? :undecided:

well what a result i have had in last 2 days managed to get my money back on my distributer  got an ecu and a genuine vw ignition module off a sound bloke on e bay (he has most parts you could want ) my boyfriend fitted them both and to my amazement the car is going like a dream no poppin or backfiring . would like to thank everyone again for there time to read and reply to my posts thanks lisa

Glad to see you've got it sorted.
