Title: Hard wired stereo?!
Post by: rwalker on 06 April 2006, 13:31
I had the shock of finding out the previous owner of my mk2 thought it was a good idea to hard wire the stereo!  My question is: now that I have bare wires what will I put on the end of them?  It would probably be easiest to fit a mk2 socket... or should I solder on an ISO socket?  What do we all think?

Thanks in advance

Go with the iso socket, you cand get iso socket to bare wire adaptors easily enough for about £10. At least then you know whatever headunit you put in should be plug and play.

Well... started soldering the ISO connector on today.  With the wiring diagram I have, everything seems to match up besides 2 wires, a solid red and a solid blue.  Does anyone have any idea what these are, they should be for the speakers?

Also, there is a random solid grey wire just hanging around, any ideas?

Its an '88.

Mines a 91 so it mite not be the same as yours but the solid blue wire on mine is the ignition live and the solid red appears to be for one of the front speakers, I don't have a solid grey wire but I do have a blue and grey wire which is the dimmer control. Just put a circuit tester on it and see if it goes live when you switch on the lights, hope this helps a bit
